This is the old one, which was used by Pope John Paul II and by Benedict XVI from last November up till now:

They are admittedly similar, but I think the new one looks much better. The placement of the coat of arms on the front rather than the sides and its larger size, the color of the velvet (red versus beige), and the elimination of the front steps makes it look rather more stately and dignified, I think. The new one also might be a bit taller.

I’d say this is a fine and warranted improvement, overall. The old one just screamed “temporary” to me.

PS: I realize this is a rather specialty sort of post :), but there really are people out there who quite like things like this. There is even a thread of over 130 pages/2500 posts ( theratzingerforum.yuku.com/topic/510/Papal-clothing-and-liturgical-practices?page=133 ) devoted to nothing but Papal clothing and liturgy specs, and needless to say, sometimes it gets quite opinionated!
 
Perhaps the color of the velvet could change with the liturgical color of the day. 🙂

I think that is an interesting idea.

On the other hand, red and gold are the papal colors and have been for an extremely long time, which comes from ancient Roman tradition. In fact, I believe that at Papal Solemn Mass (EF), the only vestment colors used are red and gold, regardless of the day.

It’s funny. As soon as I saw the title of the thread, without seeing who had started it, I knew it had to be you.

I for one enjoy you bringing these little things to our attention because these are things I would never even think of. 👍🙂
 
I think it’s great. Accommodation of physical frailties is certainly inorder. His mind is still sharp.
 
I prefer the Pre-Vatican II Extraordinary Form of carrying His Holiness on the shoulders of peasants using the sedia gestatioria, but that’s just me.



The whole rolling thing is so modern-istic-ish. Its nice for those who are into it, but really isn’t evocative of the reverence that I personally feel for the Holy Father.

They weren’t necessarily peasants. The sedia gestatoria was carried on the shoulders of twelve footmen (palafrenieri) in red uniforms.

They were actually rich Italian nobility in this case. =P
