Hi everyone,

I would like to ask a question that has been bothering me for a few days. I really hope I don’t offend anyone and receive a helpful response. I myself am a Christian (although I am not Catholic). I happened to come across a picture of Pope Benedict doing a hand signal that I am not sure what it means or in what context Pope Benedict did this, but there seem to be many anti-Catholic views about this, with many saying that it is an illuminati hand signal, implying that Pope Benedict is part of the illuminati. While I am quite sure that Pope Benedict is not part of the illuminati, I would like for someone to give me a good explanation of this hand signal, what it means and why Pope Benedict did it.
  1. Here is the picture if I am talking about

  1. There is also this one, which one website seems to claim is a masonic hand sign? I don’t know if it is a masonic hand sign though. Can someone please explain this?
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Can someone please explain the hand signs in these 3 pictures for me?

I wasn’t sure if I should post this here or not, but I would really like to read a reply to these claims and wasn’t sure where I could find one so I thought it might be a good idea to post it here.

Explain what? He’s waving in the first two and resting his head in his hands in the second.

Frankly if people dream up crazy conspiracy theories that is their problem, and no one can stop them. I am just always amazed at how gullible and eager people are to believe some crazy story rather than the obvious, which is that an 80 year old has arthritis in his hands and has some problems bending his digits or is just simply waving.

It’s a natural effect of the body. When someone is in the process of raising their hands like that, the outer fingers for some people, pop up first, and the ring and index fingers follow a millisecond later. If your congregation does a lot of hand raising in praise at service, keep a close eye on their hands. I guarantee that some of them do it too and they probably don’t even realize it. Its more prominent in older people, as another user said, due to arthritis. Since the pope is such a huge public finger, there are people photographing him constantly, and so naturally, a few shots of that exact millisecond will find their way into the public.

For the 3rd picture - that’s not the same hand sign at all. (though I would be loath to call any of them a hand sign in the first place)

[Warning: sarcasm] The first two? He’s a fan of the University of Texas Longhorns and is giving fellow fans the “Hook 'em Horns.” The third? People need to get a hobby. [Here endeth the sarcasm.]

seriously? People have a unending talent for reading things into pictures that aren’t there. 10 years on, we still have people who see the blurry footage of the Pentagon attack as proof that it was a missile instead of a jet liner hitting the building. What happened is probably His Holiness in the first two was waving and the photographer just happened to snap the shot while the Pope’s fingers were at an awkward angle. Or, he was just giving a blessing and the photographer caught him midway through changing the position of his hands. There is a -1000% chance that His Holiness is going to come out as a satanist or something, and given his age and the location, no, he’s not a headbanger either. (Nobody mentioned it, just throwin’ that out there… :bluelite: )

Yep. My mom has arthritis and she waves like that all the time.

I agree about the third picture. The Pope isn’t making a hand sign at all.

My guess is that he’s a wannabe rock guitarist practicing for the end of his scorching solo!

Slightly more seriously, it could be that he has problems with he tendons of his fingers, which causes the fingers to curl inward. I have such a problem with my right ring-finger, and often find it has curled inward involutarily. I think the tendons shorten or something. Unless it’s a real problem, such as not being able to uncurl them, it’s rarely worth the trouble of an operation to correct.

Okay, I’ll say it. You’ve been told it’s the sign of the devil. Right. The Pope is signaling the world of who we Catholics worship (sarcasm intended:wink:) Here’s our sign:signofcross::aok:

it is definatly something the pope should never do. this hand sign is a satanic gesture. it does also mean i love you in sign, unfortunatly it is also claimed that the lady (anne something can’t remember) was a satanist, “i love you satan” wether or not she was or not is irrelevant.
there is many out there who believe the cahtolic church is satanic.the pope should not give them ammuniation, although i don’t for a second believe he realised this.

there is an unbeliveable ammount of you tubes videos depicitng these hand signs as proof that we are a satanic church. the best we can do is avoid making them, whatever our reason, unless you are having a complete conversation in sign language

If, and this a big if, if the pictures are not photoshoped ( I could do that easily but go not patience to verify), it could be that The Pope is an artist.

I knew a Priest who was a great University Professor and Great History of Art Specialist and Theater Director who, in a Seminar, told us that in Pictures of Middle Ages (or Renaissance I do not remember), people appeared with folded hands, in prayer, with the 2 center fingers joined. He said that gave the hand a total appearence. If you separate the 2 center fingers, it seems that is a central gap between the 2 pairs of fingers with “does not give the impression of a hand palm”.

I tried to find a picture in google images but found none for I do not have the vocabulary: folded hands, the name of the fingers and so on.

It could be. But, most probably, it is a coincidence taken from the 10 000 000 photos taken from the Pope. If I take series of pictures of the Pope talking, I will find many of them making all kinds of funny faces and I guess it has got no hidden devilish meanings.

It’s a wave. Nothing more, nothing less.

He waves this way, as I witnessed at the papal audience, along with sort of a whole hand wave and a clasping of his hands,

In the first two, he’s just waving.

The third he just has a hand over his face. He’s obviously stressed. I do that when I’m stressed. Poor guy…We should pray for his health. 😦

on page 115 of the wonderful undergraduate textbook cultural anthropology, 12th edition, by haviland, prins, walrath, and mcbride, which i read (cover to cover, i am proud to say), in chapter five titled “language and communication”, there is mention of this sign, which has been used by satanists and university of texas football team fans alike. the caption under a photo of president bush-41 and his daughter jenna, who is making the “hook 'em, horns” sign, reads: “learned gestures to which different cultures assign different meanings are known as conventional gestures. the 'hook ‘em horns’ salute flashed by us president bush and his family during his 2005 inauguration shocked many europeans who interpreted it as a salute to satan. known as the ‘devil’s hand’ in some parts of the world, in bush’s home state of texas the gesture is a sign of love for the university of texas longhorns, whose fans shout out 'hook ‘em, horns’ at sporting events. here, bush’s daughter jenna gives the sign.”

Simple; the pinky by itself is "I’, the two middle fingers together form an = sign meaning here “agree with”, and the thumb and index finger form an “L” for Luther.
“I agree with Luther”

Thank you for your replies. I guess it was probably inaccurate to refer to any of them as hand signs/signals, but i guess I was using the terminology of the web pages that I saw that had the pictures. If anyone would like to add any more helpful replies please feel free to do so.

I think he is trying for the ASL sign “I Love You.” He is doing it wrong, but he is not alone. You are supposed also to extend your thumb to sign all three words. This is a common mistake when you see people doing it. It is a contraction of the letters “I”, “L”, and “Y”. If you look at the ASL alphabet, you will see how it is derived.

Here is a link to what it is supposed to look like:
