Vatican, Nov. 29 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) has declared a plenary indulgence for Catholics who honor the Virgin Mary on the feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8.

In a November 29 announcement, the Vatican said that Pope Benedict has declared the indulgence to mark the 40th anniversary of the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. The announcement indicates that the Pope “when he renders public homage of praise to Mary Immaculate, has the heartfelt desire that the entire Church should join with him, so that all the faithful, united in the name of the common Mother, become ever stronger in the faith, adhere with greater devotion to Christ, and love their brothers with more fervent charity.”

A plenary indulgence, as Pope Paul VI explained in Indulgentiarum Doctrina in 1967, is “a remission before god of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilty has already been forgiven.” Indulgences can be decreed by the Pope or, under certain restrictions, bishops. The faithful can obtain indulgences for themselves or for the souls in Purgatory.

The indulgence declared by Pope Benedict may be obtained by those who “participate in a sacred function in honor of the Virgin, or at least least offer open testimony of Marian devotion before an image of Mary Immaculate exposed for public veneration, adding the recitation of the Our Father and of the Creed, and some invocation to the Virgin.”

The announcement indicates that those who are ill or otherwise unable to fufill the normal conditions “may obtain a plenary indulgence in their own homes, or wherever they may be, if, with the soul completely removed from any form of sin, and with the intention of observing the aforesaid conditions as soon as possible, they unite themselves in spirit and in desire to the Supreme Pontiff’s intentions in prayer to Mary Immaculate, and recite the Our Father and the Creed.”

The decree issued on November 29 by the Apostolic Penitentiary, announcing the indulgence, also lists the usual conditions: sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and the removal of attachment to sin. The decree is signed by Cardinal James Francis Stafford and Father Gianfranco Girotti, the penitentiary major and regent, respectively, of the Apostolic Penitentiary. The issue of indulgences, and some abuses of the Church’s authority in that realm, became a topic of heated controversy during the Protestant Reformation. The Church’s teaching was clarified by the Council of Trent in 1545 to avoid future abuses.

Originally indulgences were issued as a substitute for the often severe penances that were common in the early centuries of the Church. Although the Catholic Church has always claimed the authority to issue indulgences for special occasions or for certain prescribed pious acts, public interest in gaining indulgences has lapsed in recent years. Pope John Paul II (bio - news) made a conscious effort to revive interest in this power of the Church, as has Pope Benedict XVI.

Earlier this year, Pope Benedict granted a plenary indulgence to those young people who participated fervently in the World Youth Day celebrations in Cologne in August. Pope John Paul II had declared plenary indulgences for the Jubilee Year 2000 and again for the Year of the Eucharist, which ran from October 2004 to October 2005.

Woo hoo :clapping:

I’m always torn with these whether to seek one for myself or for someone specifically in purgatory or for all souls in purgatory…

Is there any way I can obtain one for me and one for the souls in purgatory?

This is very interesting.

I have an Icon of the Blessed Mother on my desk at work. I work in a room with about a dozen other people. Would this be acceptable to “…offer open testimony of Marian devotion before an image of Mary Immaculate exposed for public veneration” ?

Could I offer prayers to Mary, the Our Father, and The Creed at work for this indulgence?

Thanks in advance.

Here are those ‘aforesaid conditions’:

The office place is not a sacred function, and while your icon of Mary is exposed to people in your office it is not exposed for public “veneration”, you aren’t inviting everyone around you to venerate the image in open testimony…it’s just there. Besides, if you did offer open testimony by inviting those around you to venerate the image you might be opening yourself up for disciplinary actions from your employer. :o

The other usual requirements for a plenary indulgence are:
The decree issued on November 29 by the Apostolic Penitentiary, announcing the indulgence, also lists the usual conditions:

sacramental Confession,
Eucharistic Communion,
prayer for the intentions of the Pope, and
the removal of attachment to sin.
I remember reading in one of the vatican documents that plenaries, since they grant remission of all temporal effects (thus restoring the soul to the state right after baptism) they are not frequently available and they are more difficult to obtain. So this really is something to celebrate!

It would seem to me those of us who really want this gift will have to find a way to go to confession within 8 days of December 8th, go to Mass on December 8th, receive communion on December 8th, and while spending a little time before a statue or image of Mary in the Church pray for the intentions of the Pope, say that Our Father, Creed and a Marian devotion, and be free from all attachment to sin.

For those who are ill or otherwise unable to fulfill the normal conditions it looks like the “** intention of observing the aforesaid conditions as soon as possible**” comes into play. I take this to mean if you absolutely cannot get to Mass that morning, that afternoon or evening in order to receive communion that day, along with the other things then you have to do so the first opportunity you get (whether that be on Friday, Saturday or Sunday).

For the kids and me, we’ll be getting to work and school late that day, I’ve already called it into the attendance person at school and notified my boss. Our church offers a 7am mass…I’ll be an hour late for work which I can make up on the other end and the kids will miss first period. Other parishes will probably offer an evening Mass as well. Be sure to check what yours is planning to see what works best for you.

This is good advice. Tonight I have CCD with my Freshmen boys. I’m taking a printout of the article to give them to take home. What a beautiful blessing we are getting from the Pope and a great teaching moment.

OK Thanks. I was thinking of the public thing as being not at Church but more out in the open among the general population that maybe would not be familiar with a devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Doing this at Church is easy and comfortable. Doing it somewhere more “public” makes it not so easy and not so comfortable. I guess I was looking at this differently.

Well, there’s a few statues of the blessed mother in the local church I attend and I can make it to the evening mass next thursday. It’d be great to get a plenary indulgance (which requires confession) during advent as a way to prepare for Christmas.

Everyone should try there best to take advantage of this great gift from the Holy Father.

I think you are on the right track with that though, that’s the impression I got as well. It’s just that having it ‘just’ exposed didn’t seem to be enough to me to qualify for a ‘veneration’… I get the impression to qualify you would have to make an announcement of some sort about the image you are posting in a prominent place, that you’re doing it that day because it is the feast of the Immaculate Conception (explaining the significance of that), invite those around you to join you for 15-20 minutes in offering prayers to God in honor of her (I don’t think it has to be a rosary but there are so many marian prayers I would think 2 or three of them would suffice.)

My concern was doing that in a work environment. I work in a state public institution so I’m definitely prohibited from such a thing. I wonder if they’re thinking along the lines of a public park, a library, a mall???

I was thinking of getting some roses to put at the foot of the statue in our local church. It’s of the image on the miraculous metal. I would then say the required prayers along with some marian prayers and the prayers for the pope in front of the statue. I plan to do this right before mass.

I imagine this will fulfill the requirements - along with confession on saturday the 3rd (first 5 saturdays devotion) and mass on the 8th.

My daughter was born on this special day, a double celebration, nice one Pope Benedict xvi. :bible1:

I offer my indulgences to Mary and ask her to apply them to souls of her choosing.

What is meant by ‘removal of attachment to sin’?
Ah, finally someone beat me to it!

I’d like to know the answer to that too, please…

Fr. Altier once said that was the most difficult requierement of a plenary indulgence to meet but he didn’t get to explain why or offer suggestions on how to go about it. (This was on the Drew Mariani show, I think…)

I think it means having a clear heart, mind, soul for that entire day…which to me, means, I can’t have any ill thoughts run through my mind, I must be patient and charitable all day, forgiving; there can be no lustful thoughts, no little white lies, etc.

My best recourse for that would be to just stay at the church all day praying so my mind is focused only on God, but boy, is that near impossible!

Do you think maybe I’m on the right track though, about what it means?

Oooh…interesting…thanks for the link…
by clicking on the link posted in #6 I notice the ‘attachment’ requirement is worded “be free from all attachment to **venial **sin”.

I guess, 'cause if you’ve been to confession all mortal sin would already have been removed???

Still, even that document states: “This last is most difficult” and then doesn’t offer suggestions on how one should go about trying to fulfill it… 😦

FYI: December 8th is a Holy Day of Obligation in most places, so we have to attend mass anyway . . .

I have one of those wipe off calendars that I fill in each month, and I must have been anxious to get the indulgence, cause I wrote it in on the first by accident, and tried to take my family to Mass yesterday! :o I felt so stupid when there was no one there. Oh well, we’re ready for next week. 🙂

thanks for the news ; guess the emphasis on being free of attachment to venial sin has to be the great motivator , to help us to get that renewd hope and strenght ; how merciful the heart of our mother Church is - reflecting The Father’s ; even seem too easy , yet like a good Mother , she challenges us to be what we ought to be - free of holding grudges , fearful , critcising thoughts , holy …

'Mary concieved without sin, pray for us ’ …

Help us to see every person through the Merits of The Passion of The Lord …
If one plenary indulgence can wipe off all stain of sin, how can we hold persons in the debt of their previous falls …

The Eucharist also offer us very similar graces I would think …having the special excitement of the plenary indulgence help us to appreciate all the sacramental graces even more , esp. mercy !

Help us to be merciful and trusting Dear Lord and Bl. mother !
