Vatican City, Dec 1, 2008 / 10:47 am (CNA).- As the Church begins a new liturgical year with the start of Advent, Pope Benedict XVI has published his prayer intentions for the month of December. He mentions in particular taking up the fight against the culture of death and that Christ may be made known as the hope of the world.

Pope Benedict’s general prayer intention for December is: “That, faced by the growing expansion of the culture of violence and death, the Church may courageously promote the culture of life through all her apostolic and missionary activities.”

His mission intention is: “That, especially in mission countries, Christians may show through gestures of brotherliness that the Child born in the grotto in Bethlehem is the luminous Hope of the world.”

Fr. Groeschell said that JPII was being kind when he called the U.S. “a culture fo death”, because what we really are developing into is a “culture of killing”.

I think he’s right.

Aye, I can see how one of “death” might simply be focused on mortality. Whereas in ours, we do everything possible to avoid the very subject of death (Just for men comes to mind, though the Media especially seems focused on perpetual youth), though spiritual death abounds, and murder is quite legal (under certain circumstances).

What bugs me the most about it is that we’re dishonest. I could almost respect the culture if it said, “Yes this is bad, yes this is murder, yes we murder, and we’ll continue to murder, and this is our war against goodness and righteousness! If God isn’t dead, then we’ll do our damndest to make Him, and all His children with Him!”

Ah! See? That’s what I want, I wan’t the culture to take a stand, and be hot or be cold, I wan’t it to stand so I can stand against it (Or for it, were it to chose to behave.)

But ours is so deceptive, so wishy-washy… We often associate black with evil and the devil, but as was said, his favourite color is grey. I know the devil is out to make good look evil and vice versa, but it gets old, really fast!
