Can someone please shed some light on why the present Pontiff is still using Pope John Paul II’s coat of arms??

Only yesterday 1st May, he appeared at the window of his apartment and draped over the window ledge was a banner still carrying the cross and the ‘M’. Exactly the same as the one shown below.

As far as I know this never happened before. I have looked it up and I see that when JP II was elected the banner had no crest. It was left blank.

Is there really a new coat of arms for Pope Benedict?? Surely if there was it would have seen the light of day by now.

Any thoughts?

Creation of a banner like the one in your illustration can take weeks – if not months. It involves designing, planning, hand cutting, applique/reverse applique, trapunto, couched work with gold wire and that raised-trapunto Turkish style embroidery with gold and silver thread. You don’t just whip this up on your PhotoShop.

I know and I agree, however I can’t understand why they are continuing to use the previous Pontiff’s coat of arms now that he has departed for Heaven. I though the Pontiff’s coat of arms dies with him?

Up to now, the crest was left blank. They have one they use whilst they are preparing the new one. It simply has a coat of arms but with no central motif.

Oh and by the way today is John Paul II’s month’s mind 😦 Let us renew our prayers for him.

But I have also heard that this is still a draft form. There is speculation (hope) that he will retain the Papal tiara instead of replacing it with the mitre. Personally, I am of the “hope” mentality.

Personally, I will consider nothing to be official until it shows up on the front page of the Vatican website.

Fergal: Start a new thread on that or we’ll space it. Eternal rest, grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the Mercy of God forever rest in peace. We love you, old Holy Father, pray for your grieving children.

Below is a picture from today’s Sunday Angelus blessing showing the new pope and his new coat of arms being displayed officially from his window for the first time.

Personally, I like the changes (i.e., mitre and pallium) that have been made to it – I believe they emphasize important aspects of the papacy. Remember, one of the pope’s official titles is “Servant of the Servants of God.”

Gone is the beehive-shaped crown whose actual use in important ceremonies was abandoned during the papacy of Paul VI. For Pope Benedict’s ensign, the more modest and recognizable miter has taken its place.

Another novelty is the addition of the white pallium with black crosses draped below the shield. “It indicates the (bishop’s) role of being pastor of the flock entrusted to him by Christ,” wrote Archbishop Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo.
