. . . Just caught this on my alarm clock radio several minutes ago. Let’s see if it turns out to be legit - no other details given except the 28th of Feb this year as the potential date.

Let’s pray . . .

Just read this myself on a UK paper, came on here to find out if anyone has any further information, don’t quite know how to react to this.

Wait for confirmation from an official source before reacting at all - not everything that supposedly comes from Vatican sources is completely true - or indeed true at all.

It’s official - he’s announced it himself. I’m pretty shocked to hear this; popes don’t abdicate, but Benedict was always a man who followed the drum where he heard it lead. I’m really sad to hear this, too. He was the guy who brought me back to the Church, and I just hope his reforms are carried on under his successor.

Could this be true?

It doens’t feel right??

Announced it to who though? Not publically, at least not directly.

Holy See has just confirmed it.

Raymond Arroyo was just on CNN discussing it.

Press Conference expected in a bit.

I never thought this could happen. I guess he must have a good reason, but I am afraid this will cause more problems and scandal to the Church. And it has enough of it already. I just saw some very mean comments about him and the Church on public news sites and I feel the worst is coming. But I am in a shock and I can’t think things through at this point. I pray it is just a misinformation!

ksenja,

Yes, no doubt worse is to come, but Benedict has seen it coming and has had the courage to accept it. We’re Catholics; if the world doesn’t hate us, we’re doing it wrong.

I don’t think it will cause scandal. There’s no disgrace or scandal in being realistic about the limitations of the human body, but rather, I think many people will admire Pope Benedict XVI for his willingness to step aside to allow a younger, stronger man to assume the responsibilities.

I think many decent people understand that it is difficult for someone who is 85 years old to continue to do a full day’s work, and the Holy Father doesn’t just work 8 hours a day, but 24/7. He’s never really “off work,” since he bears the responsibility of shepherding the Christians of the world.

My father is expected to die in the next few days (cancer), and he’s 83. So frail and weak now. So I feel like I’m losing two fathers this month.

This is so sad! I’m at a lose for words. Waking up to the news that the Holy Father no longer wants to be the Bishop of Rome.

Let us all pray for our dear Holy Father Benedict.

I know Mustard.
It is just that I recently reverted and I am currently experiencing a lot of hate in my personal life because of my religion. It hurts me very deeply so I guess I am too sensitive about it. I pray for him and for the Church to go through these difficult times as quickly as possible and that it comes out even stronger. I know our Lord is with his beloved bride- always.

I have a feeling that if it were merely a matter of what he wanted he would never have agreed to become Pope in the first place. There’s much more to it.

If anything it might allow a bit of the dust which has been kicked up during his Pontificate to settle.
