The Vatican – Pope Benedict XVI has a special message for the world with the start of the New Year and it focuses on condemning abortion and birth control. The pope urged efforts to end poverty across the globe but said those efforts must also be life-affirming for women and unborn children.

The pope’s opinion of population control takes on added interest in light of comments made by John Holdren, the president elect’s newly chosen science adviser. In a presentation he made in 2007 called Global Climate Disruption - What Do We Know, What Should We Do? the first item on his list of options to address the problem is … population control.

Doesn’t Pope Benedict support the global warming hypothesis?

Popes have learned better than to weigh in on scientific matters.

Benedict has been careful to encourage the flock to be good stewards of God’s creation. He leaves it to science to determine what actions cause more harm than good.

In short, he knows where his jurisdiction is and where he’s just another guy like you.

Global warming discussions and policy proposals have little to do with science.

Maybe he does, but that doesn’t have much to do with population control, which most often ends up being coercive policies aimed at limiting the size of families among the poor/minorities. Population control is one of the eugenics movement’s surviving children, and it is rightly condemned.

Of course, the title of this thread (and many others that report on what Benedict XVI says) could be, “Pope Still Catholic! Film at Eleven!”

Perhaps and perhaps not. Either way, it is up to the scientific community to determine this, not the church - UNLESS and UNTIL the global warming folks cross the line into moral realms (which is starting to happen and will get worse soon). The pope will and must speak out when people attempt to use scientific theories to challenge christian morality and teaching.

Taking a subjective moral judgement
(Global Warming)
And
Treating it as though is were a moral absolute
Is Subjectivism

This is not Catholic.

Especially if population control
is on the first item on the list of options
To respond to Global Warming

Pope Benedict was a member of the Nazi Youth?
