I’m assuming Pope Benedict XVI is a Benedictine ?
I can’t seem to find anything for sure after searching the net. I can’t even find any info about the seminary he attended. All hits I got by googling St Michael’s offer nothing but the fact that the Pope went there.

Anyone know what order runs the seminary itself ?

No. Joseph Ratzinger was a diocesan priest through and through.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Thanks Bat.
Ha, I spent an hour trying to find out on the net, and you reply in 6 minutes !

'preciate it 😉

As an odd sidenote, Popes named Benedict are never Benedictines–I tried to compile a list of religious popes. Here’s how far I got:

Dominican Popes: Bl. Innocent V, Bl. Benedict XI, St. Pius V, Benedict XIII

Franciscan Popes: Nicholas IV, Sixtus IV, Sixtus V, Clement XIV

Benedictine Popes: St. Gregory I, Sylvester II, St. Gregory VII, Bl. Victor III, Paschal II, St. Gelasius II, St. Celestine V, Clement IV, Bl. Urban V, Pius VII, Gregory XVI

That is surprising. Perhaps no one has ever chose the name of the father of their Order out of… respect ? It is odd.

Thanks for sharing that

Hope this isn’t too off topic…but I’m wondering why a priest would look to join an order. Why wouldn’t all priests just be diocesan priests?

Are the majority of priests a part of a particular order?

CARA shows that in 2010 there were 277,009 diocesan priests and 135,227 religious priests in the world.

Diocesan priests and religious priests have different vocations. For the religious, the first call is to be a Benedictine, Franciscan, Jesuit, etc. Secondarily they are priests. (And one can be fully Benedictine or fully Franciscan without ever being ordained.)

The Pope Emeritus is a Benedictine. He is a Benedictine Oblate.🙂

I appreciate the replies very much! Especially on such an old thread 🙂

That really helps me understand the place of religious orders.
