MYTILENE, Greece —Pope Francis on Saturday took three refugee families back with him on his plane to Rome following an emotional and provocative visit to the Greek island of Lesbos that seemed designed to prick Europe’s conscience over its treatment of refugees.
The pope boarded his Alitalia jet along with 12 Syrians from three families, all of whom had had their houses bombed and are seeking refuge in Europe, according to Vatican spokesman the Rev. Thomas Rosica. There were six children among them. Rosica said the families would be cared for at the Vatican.

I don’t like this Pope. There is nothing inherently compassionate in allowing immigration (and these are immigrants, not refugees), and there is nothing inherently evil in banning it.

Pope Francis is indulging far too much in blind Eurocratic utopianism, a philosophy of pride and power rather than that of humility and love. It is not compassionate at all to feel good about youself for allowing immigration when you don’t have to deal with the negative consequences, and it is wicked to dismiss those who actually have to deal with the consequences as “uncompassionate.”

Quite honestly, this Papacy seems too worldly to me. I don’t know how much the media is perverting the reporting of the interpretations and intentions of the Holy Father, but he should by now know better, which would mean that, even if he is ignorant, it probably is a culpable ignorance.

It really, really hurts me to say that last sentence 😦

Wonderful story this is a wonderful Pope.

This extract was great

“…God created mankind to be one family; when any of our brothers and sisters suffer, we are all affected. We all know from experience how easy it is for some to ignore other people?s suffering and even to exploit their vulnerability. But we also know that these crises can bring out the very best in us…”.

I like that it was Muslim Families he took, though that was not the criteria as it was need based.

Why are people not allowed to have opinions not agreeing with the Pope’s move? People are allowed to have differing opinions on immigration.

As an Italian, I feel like the country has taken in more than enough refugees, and there is enough strain on our services to keep them, and honestly, do not need Pope Francis bringing in more of them. I’m willing to bet a lot of Italian Catholics feel exactly the same.

The Pope sees mankind as one family under one God. 😉

There are no boundaries but what we make and sees no “Strain” on helping others even if it makes one “poor” in the process.

God gives in abundance to all that follow his word and example.

Thus as this Pope practices what He Preaches, to have opinions against Him, could also be a rejection of the Word He Lives.

Hi Tony,

That’s a beautiful quote was it from the Pope or from a Baha’i Book?

The popes used to have very clearly-defined boundaries, known as the Papal States. And they initially vigorously opposed the creation of Kingdom of Italy because of their desire for their own state.

Now state boundaries don’t exist? This is a new one for me.

I thought he was bringing them back to live in the Vatican. How can he bring refugees into Italy? And if he has, I hope the church is fully sponsoring them and covering all costs.

What bothers me about this trip is that he never addressed the plight of the residents of Lesbos, who have had their island overwhelmed by this. Had he brought back a few thousand to live in the Vatican he would have experienced the stress lesbos is under.

12 people is just a pr move and puts the Vatican under no stress.

Well from what I have seen here on Catholic.com…most Catholic folks here totally support the Pope. It does seem that some Catholics around the world have forgot about the chivalrous Catholic Knights of the past who helped the poor. The romantic stories of Robin Hood and The Knight of the Swan were written because the writers were influenced by the honorable actions of past Christians. Christians of the middle ages were not about only building walls and no brides. Pope Francis is following in the footsteps of all of the honorable Catholic Knights and leaders of the middle ages.

What a cynical and calloused statement. It is not a PR move for those who are free of the refugee camps. It is not an insignificant number for a place the size of Vatican City.

How can any Catholic call the charity of the Pope PR?

He has also never commented on the island of Lampedusa which has been battered by the influx of refugees.

They’re Europeans though, so who cares, right?

Yes he’s bringing them to the Vatican but there aren’t border controls between the Vatican and the Italian-ruled portion of Rome. Who is to say that they won’t just walk away and try to roam freely in Italy or in other European nations? You think the Pope would keep them there if they decided to just migrate elsewhere?
