**Pope’s man to face fury over ‘convert’ text **04/04/2008
By Simon Rocker
The Pope’s British envoy is to visit West London Reform Synagogue on Shabbat amid what its rabbi calls the “most acute crisis” in Jewish-Catholic relations in the past 20 years. Rabbi Mark Winer will publicly bring up the controversy sparked by the Pope’s endorsement of a Good Friday prayer which openly calls for the conversion of the Jews.

Archbishop Faustino Sainz Muñoz, the Apostolic Nuncio, is due to preach at the synagogue’s Shabbat morning service and to take part in a post-kiddush discussion with Rabbi Winer.

In the draft of an address to be delivered tomorrow, Rabbi Winer says that “expressions of Jewish anger” over the prayer “have reached a level I do not recall in my lifetime of dialogue, as a rabbi, with the Catholic Church. Rabbinical bodies in some countries have forbidden their rabbis from participating in dialogue with representatives of the Holy See. Antisemitic riots and incidents have occurred in more than a few places.”

I for one, sure would like to know where Good Friday Prayers for the Jews have caused “riots and incidents”. Other than Rabbi Winer’s imagination.

If I recall correctly, the prayer makes a brief mention of the fact that the Jewish people have turned away from the Messiah, and merely asks God to bring about their conversion. What upsets them is the wordage of the prayer, which essentially calls them rebellious. Let’s face it, God DID send Jesus to His people. His own people DID reject Him. As Christians, we should long for the time that prophecy says His people will finally accept Him. And so we pray for the Jews in this prayer. (Again, that is IF I am thinking of the correct prayer. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. ). It is still ridiculous for them to riot over a prayer that evidences that we care for them.

This really is much ado about nothing. Really, if they thought they had the right religion, and if they truly cared for us, shouldn’t they be praying for our conversion? It’s really the Christian thing to do. 😉 But seriously, what is the big flippin deal? People really need to get a grip. :whacky:

Well, count me in. I live in the UK and would also like to know where these have supposedly taken place. Honestly, I am beginning to lose my patience with these interference in the practice of our faith.“Don’t do this” “Don’t say that” etc etc…I feel so harassed.

Sadly I agree with you and feel it is their (the jewish leaders) over reaction to the prayer that may fuel new anti-semitic sentiments. Rather than the ORIGINAL prayer its self

Pope Caused Anti-Semetic Riots
Nonsense like this will make anti-semites out of unbigoted Catholics everywhere. Kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Its hard to raise funds to fight anti-semitism when everyone has simply stopped being anti-semitic. So they have to create anti-semites out of innocent previously unbigoted Catholics, by unjust attacks on their pope and this milquetoast revised TLM prayer.

Remember how some of the Jewish leadership acted when Jesus Christ called for their conversion? It was much worse. It shouldn’t be a surprise that some of the Jewish leadership will have a negative reaction even in our time.

As a religious Jew, I for one have no problem with Catholics praying for the conversion of my people…as long as they leave it there and do not do a repeat of what they did in the Middle Ages, with forced baptisms, expulsions, auto da fe’s and the like.

Besides, evidently God is not planning on answering such a prayer, since there are still millions of “unsaved” Jews out there, and in fact, traditional Judaism is growing by leaps and bounds, not only due to natural growth (Orthodox Jews tend to have large families), but also due to people converting to Judaism.

In Judaism, in the daily morning prayers, Jewish men say a prayer thanking God that they were not created as Gentiles, slaves or women. This is NOT to imply there is anything wrong with being a Gentile, a slave or a woman, but because only Jewish men were required to perform certain religious duties, they are thanking God that they were born into the group that is so required to carry out certain religious duties.
