Because we need to recognise our complacency on the issue and not just pay meaningless lip service to it.Simply highlighting things that are already sins.
This begs the question…why?
acanonlawyer already answered this question. Why? What is wrong about the phrase sin against ecology?
I could certainly have been less cryptic. Ecology, in my understanding, is the study of how living things relate to each other and the environment. How would a person “sin against” a field of study?

And will we be expecting Big Companies and Big Governments to go to confession for their ecological sins, and save their corporate souls…?VanitasVanitatum:![]()
Or major political leaders, who are as I understand it responsible in large part for the mess that’s going on with the Amazon. But most of this sounds like it’s aimed to big companies which most people have no control over.
This isn’t aimed at the average well-educated earth-conscious Catholic in the USA.
The pope was speaking to a group of lawyers. There are some other tangential things to big corporations as well. He mentioned some of them, for example: governments, protestors, indigenous people of the effected lands. All of those people can benefit from having more moral authority at their disposal through documents such as Laudato si’ and the CCC.But most of this sounds like it’s aimed to big companies which most people have no control over.
A lot of sin has ambiguity attached to it. It may explain why we see so many is-this-a-sin threads on CAF. Wherever there’s gray areas, we consult with our confessors. That’s how it’s been since the birth of our Church. This could be OK…but the question is, how would “sins against ecology” be defined?
Theres a reason the date keeps shifting back, technology and regulation catch up. Why do you think even ICE only cars are increasingly powered by small bore, turbo engines, or why they are increasingly made from lighter materials? Those sort of changes buy more time, however we are past the point of making small incremental changes, we need to radically change how we consume in the west.In the 1970’s they said we have ten years. In the 1980’s they said ten years. Now they say ten years.
