But does unity mean a political pluralistic type of unity, such as we have in the USA, or does it necessarily imply a unity and uniformity on all beliefs?If he were converting to Orthodoxy, he would likely pursue the unification of the two Churches - in which case he wouldn’t have to convert.
Unity is what Christ has called us to and the Pope and Patriarchs are most responsible for doing what is necessary to see that their comander and chief, Jesus, orders are followed out and that we are united. Glad I’m not in their shoes!
I did hear an Orthodox Christian say that it would be a first step toward unity if the Pope did “convert” to Orthodoxy. however, for the union to take place, it would only be a first step, since, according to his view of it, each Catholic would also have to agree individually to the union.
