Pope conversion

If he were converting to Orthodoxy, he would likely pursue the unification of the two Churches - in which case he wouldn’t have to convert.

Unity is what Christ has called us to and the Pope and Patriarchs are most responsible for doing what is necessary to see that their comander and chief, Jesus, orders are followed out and that we are united. Glad I’m not in their shoes!
But does unity mean a political pluralistic type of unity, such as we have in the USA, or does it necessarily imply a unity and uniformity on all beliefs?
I did hear an Orthodox Christian say that it would be a first step toward unity if the Pope did “convert” to Orthodoxy. however, for the union to take place, it would only be a first step, since, according to his view of it, each Catholic would also have to agree individually to the union.

One could imply if the Pope converted to Eastern Orthodox, Catholicism and Orthodoxy would be unified…
Not really. Like I said in the previous post, it would only be a first step, since, according to what I was told, after the conversion of the Pope, each Catholic would have to convert individually and ratify the union.

Personally for me Unity would not require any “conversion” because they are essentially the same church just the removal of the Bishop among the Bishops status and the changing of the nicene creed back to the way it was and the removal of Marian dogma (which I have no problem with the actual beliefs just the fact that it is dogma).

not that it would ever… ever… ever happen but…

i think it would go to show that the pope would not be infallible in the areas of faith and morals. if the pope abandoned the catholic faith, then the office of the pope would have to come into question. again, this would (and according to catholic doctrine could) never happen.

AFAICS, Papal infallibility is in the defining of a thing to be a dogma - not in persevering in believing it to be a dogma.

So if Pius XII had become Orthodox after he defined the Assumption, the definition would have been unaffected, & so would the infallibility of the Petrine office by virtue of which it was defined; his successor would have been as potentially infallible as he actually was on that occasion in defining that dogma to be a dogma.

Hi

I think the Pope, residing in the Western society, should not be denied of a free choice to get convinced from the strong arguments of the PromisedMessiah 1835-1908 that Jesus never died a cursed death on Cross, right from the Bible. He must be free to share such experience with the Catholic and Non-Catholic Christians alike without fearing any reprisals from them. This is fruit of the secular free thinking.

Thanks

Jesus DID die on the cross. There is too much evidence from eye-witnesses in the Bible, including his own mother. I assure you that this pope knows as much about other faiths as anyone, and he sees no merit in the belief that Jesus did not suffer, die, and rise again. Along with the eye-witnesses, there were Old Testement Prophacies and Jesus’ own words before and after to indicate that he would and did die! As much as I enjoy the discussion on Islam, this one is off the mark, especially on this thread.

LOL.
you’re welcome. and thank you for the laugh.

The Pope converted into other denomination?? One way to do so, First, he must resign from his papal position, then he resign his status as a bishop, then he declared himself outside the CC (by excommunication may be), then he can choose to belief whatever religion he wants. Based on human ego itself, it is already illogical. Let alone in the eye of faith. Such possibility is not worth a dime for discussing, I believe.

IF the pope converted to anything else, the cardinals would simply elect a new pope. The bigger problem would be IF the pope were to make some statement “from the chair”. The issue would have to be debated and researched, and could only go forward if it did not contradict existing scriptures or doctrine.

In essence the pope really could not proclaim any off beat doctrine unless it were consistent with things that came before.

In the past, Heaven itself has helped to establish the direction the Church was to follow. Lourdes, St. Bernedette and Our Lady helped one pope decide the question of Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception. No doubt Christ or Our Lady would assist any other pope with other momentous decisions.
