The Vatican is hiring a new image director for Pope Benedict XVI, and here’s what he has to say about the Pope’s traditional vestments:

The pope’s robes are “too sumptuous and flashy,” the 84-year-old director of “Jesus of Nazareth” and “Romeo and Juliet” told the daily La Stampa. They should instead reflect “the simplicity and sobriety seen in the other echelons of the Church,” he said.

Things were going so well! What is the Vatican thinking hiring this guy? And since when does the Vicar of Christ need an image consultant?

Just goes to show the old Liberals are still haunting The Church.

I wouldn’t worry about this. I checked out yahoo and only in ONE report did it say Zeffirelli had actually been ‘chosen’.

ALL the other reports said only that he had ‘offered his services’. NOTHING about him actually being chosen. And the people he talked to weren’t even ‘listed’ in the interview.

PLUS there is nothing on Zenit or any reputable ‘church’ site.

I think it was just an error on that one report that made Mr. Z’s words in an interview on something ELSE look like he was actually being interviewed because he was chosen consultant to the Pope. Which he wasn’t.

Come on Pope Benedict XVI! Please listen to Msgr. Marini over this fellow who probably doesn’t know anything at all about good vestments.

I think we’d all agree that the Holy Father, Benedict XVI has surprised everyone since his election in 2005. He has shown himself as one who knows that we must look forward, but that traditions are very important too. I don’t really think we’ll have to worry about this matter - if the pope wants to wear traditional vestments, then I’ve no doubt he will…Whatever this new guy says, I’m sure the Pope will do what he knows works best!!

I saw this article as well and I took it to mean that he was only offering his services and not that he was chosen. I would be very upset if this man were given the opportunity to take the image of the Papacy in the direction he described.

No matter what he wears, even if only an overcoat and shower shoes, he would still be the Pope 🙂 .
Sometimes the Supreme Pontiff does appear to be physically burdened by the layers of vestments. Sometimes we foreget that today’s vestments are a carryover from ancient times, when many of these items were everyday wear, rather than coverings of modern clothing. At least the Pope, and other priests, are not expected to wear that useless symbol of the “properly dressed gentleman”, the necktie.

This is something I find particularly moving. The acolytes (I think) have to help him with the vestments just to move around the altar. This is a visually powerful image of the burden of leadership and the need to have the Church to help and support the Pope in his role.

I just love the new/old vestments!!! It seems like every stich is full of meaning.

Yes, because the Pope should look like every other “joe-schmoe” out there on the street. He’s really not that important anway. Downplaying his importance would do wonders for his ability to lead the Church of Christ.

Not just the Pope, but when in full regalia at a Tridentine Mass a priest is assisted with robes and attendant paranaphalia by the altar boys or deacon…it is for the glory of God not for any other reason…the full kit can be boiling hot in humid summers a real penance for the priest…but it is for a short time even with the fans at top twirl…🙂

Great, a gay film director wants to tell the Pope how to dress and act…

Oboy! :banghead: The Vatican really is embarrassing sometimes. First the ten commandments of driving, now this…

I don’t think we have anything to fear. We already have the good choice of Marini II appointed, and I think the Pope has a strong-enough personality to tell people to go take a hike! 👍

What’s ironic about Franco Zeffirelli making this kind of suggestion is that he himself is known for his lush and visually beautiful films. If it’s good enough for his films, it’s good enough for the Pope.

Don’t worry folks, he’s definitely not being hired. He made his suggestions unsolicited, and arrogantly proposed that the Vatican ought to hire him as an “image consultant.” Nothing to see here…

Ironic though how some are always ready to assume the worst without verifying it.

The posters at the end of the article who commented were quick to have a go at the Church or members of the Church werent they? As if they were waiting for something to have a go at.

This is quite an uncharitable comment. You are judging a man and not his actions with this kind of statements. It looks like him being gay does not allow him to do anything right. If that is true then you are siding with the Italian homosexual community that is still blasting Zeffirelli for the support of the Church on Her positions on homosexuality.
