“Never abandon the Rosary. Pray the Rosary, as she asked.”

This was the message of Pope Francis to pilgrims at the Fatima Shrine in Portugal on October 13, the centenary of Our Lady’s final apparition at the Cova da Iria. And the same refrain echoes through the Church and across the centuries: Never abandon the Rosary. Pray the Rosary, as she asked.

My mother and teachers used the term “Church Militant” when I was growing up, before the world ever heard of Trump. It was understood that doing things such as praying the rosary, standing up for what’s right, joining the Legion of Mary or the Blue Army, etc was being part of the Church Militant. This is also why a lot of prayer-oriented groups have military-sounding names.

I believe it was also discussed in our Baltimore Catechism though it’s been a long time and maybe I’m confusing it with some other textbook. As discussed in Wiki, it’s a basic Christian theology concept that there is a Church Militant, a Church Penitent, and a Church Triumphant.

Jamie, it’s not anything to “lol” at and to do so is disrespectful. A basic theological term being co-opted for political hooha is also disrespectful in my mind, though, and I doubt that anyone involved in writing such gunk for the NY Times has any idea about the underlying concept or a clue about it beyond wanting to write another anti-Trump article.

I am in one prayer group that characterizes itself as “church militant”, which among other things has prayed against abortion and has prayed that God will protect our country and president and guide him and our leaders. To me, this is stuff you should be praying for every day regardless of who is sitting in office.
 
The mystical body of Christ consists of the Church Militant (earth), the Church Suffering (purgatory), and the Church Triumphant (Heaven)
 
I disagree with calling the Church in purgatory penitent. For the term pertains very well to the soul before (and after if promised heaven) his or her particular judgment. The traditional term Church Suffering makes a better distinction.

St. Basil, Doctor of the Church, said in the beginning of his Morals, “That they who believe in the Lord must first do penance according to the preaching of John and of our Lord Jesus Christ himself; for they who do not penance now will receive a harsher sentence than those who were condemned before the time of the Gospel.” (cf. Mt 4:17, 11: 20-22)…That this present life is the time for penance and remission of sins; in the life to come, the just judgment of retribution will take place." (Rule 1, cap. 1; p. 71, CUA Press)

I didn’t invent the term “Church Penitent” and I know that “Church Suffering” or sometimes “Church Repentant” have been used instead. Not being a theologian, I’m okay with any of the terms as long as it’s understood to be the souls in Purgatory which is what it’s supposed to refer to.
 
Did not claim you invented anything. But yet the term is the basic principle that expresses meaning in a statement. And it good that the reader gets a better grasp of the meaning of any of the terms in doctrine. I am not a theologian either.
