Hi I was wondering why the pope is “his holiness” and papacy ?
On another subject I was told that you should call no one alse father paroart from your bio father so why do we call preists father when where not ment to ?
Thanks for ur help

I believe what you may have heard was that we should “call no man ‘Father’ on Earth because God in Heaven is our only Father”. Not an exact quote, but this comes from the Gospel of Matthew, I believe, and is frequently taken out of context by non-Catholics to protest the way we address our priests.

See here for a more thorough analysis: catholic-forum.com/churches/luxver/father.htm
but the short answer is that it’s not wrong to call men “father” out of respect.

Chuck these are questions for the Apologetics section. I see another of your threads on the origins of the Catholic Church (the pagan conspiracy) in this section.

Hopefully the mods will move it there so you can get your answer quicker and have a thorough answer 🙂

Yeah if thats correct then don’t call your father father. Don’t call your teacher teacher either since thats the next verse. The verse is taken out of context by protestants just like much of the bible.

We don’t call the Pope “papacy”. The papacy is one word for the office which has the same Latin root as the word “pope”: pater which means (you guessed it) “father”.

We also call him “Holy Father”, “Vicar of Christ,” etc., etc.

For info on the “Call no man on earth Father” prooftexting that some protestants do, I recommend reading this tract:

Call No Man “Father”?

I think it has to do with the traditions of the Church taking an early lead from Paul who in his letters to the Corinthians calls the members of the Church his or my children.

Hey Chuck,

Here is some scriptures to consider (along with Holy Tradition)

In the NT:

St. Paul calls himself our spiritual father in 1 Cor 7:8 and 1 Cor 4:15-17

St. Paul again talks about the role of spiritual fathers in 1 Thess 2:11-12

In the OT:

Spiritual Fatherhood was understood in OT times, consider these verses in the book of Judges for why we call priests “Father”

Judges 17:10

Judges 18:19

There is even more support, but I would recommend you ask this question in the apologist forum

Many will not even call their own father “father”.

I have been told on more than one occasion “He’s not my father, he’s my daddy.” It wasn’t until many years later I made the connection with “call no man father”.

Interesting…as the Greek word “Pater” is used in the NT over 100 times.

Was Jesus wrong in referring to “Father Abraham” ?
56* Your father Abraham rejoiced that he was to see my day; he saw it and was glad.
"John 8:56
