Vatican City, Oct 12, 2018 / 04:01 am ([CNA](https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/)).- Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Washington’s Cardinal Donald Wuerl on Friday, while asking the cardinal to continue leading the Archdiocese of Washington on an interim basis until a permanent successor is appointed.
In a letter to Wuerl obtained by CNA Oct. 12, Pope Francis told the cardinal: “Your renunciation is a sign of your availability and docility to the Spirit who continues to act in his Church.”

“In accepting your resignation, I ask you to remain as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until the appointment of your successor.”

He accepted his resignation, which was 3 years behind according to age.

I agree. The problem with Wuerl, is that he only resigned after the pressure became too intense. Before this resignation, he was trying everything to remain in his position and keep up his image. I hope there are more who are forced to leave as well.

It’s easy to tell that Pope Francis only reluctantly accepted his resignation, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he is still administrator of Washington for a year or more. If Wuerl hadn’t insisted that he resign, he would still be there.

My guess is Bishop McElroy from San Diego is moved there and made a Cardinal when Wuerl turns 80. He perfectly fits the typical mold of bishops that Pope Francis likes to pick for high profile Anerican dioceses.

I think you are right, and as someone who lives in this Archdiocese, I am dreading this if you are correct. Cdl. Wuerl was more or less orthodox in how he ran everything here, but if McElroy comes here we’ll probably be inundated with LGBT propaganda and multiple visits from Fr. James Martin each year. Not a prospect I am looking forward to.

Yeah but he’s still Administrator for an undetermined period of time…

It really bothers me that he is being kept on until they replace him. It should have been an immediate, complete change.

Dont get this.

'What did Cardinall Wuerl do. I see there were three cases in which he transfer priests and short time later they were gone.

Reports say he got rid of 32+ priests and was zero tolerance… He was made cardinal by Pope Benedict in 2010.

What happened in Boston from the early 20th century until 1990’s I am sure happened across the world with the cover-ups and by now most of these priests are dead.

The church realized this and became zero tolerance.

Elevate Fr. Marcel Guarnizo whom Wuehrl chased out of the DC Diocese for defending the Eucharist (my take) by not “giving it to” a woman who’d made a point of letting him know she was a Lesbian in a current relationship and (not a Catholic anymore … a Buddhist? … anyway giving her communion that day would have been a sacrilege … so Fr. Guarnizo didn’t do it).

First Fr. Guarnizo was chastised and asked to apologize … soon after he was removed from the DC Diocese.

OK So he has a grudge to bear for being unfairly treated.

I get that but most in the church have taken this stand on pro-abortion members of congress. This goes back to Notre Dame when politician were able to say privately they opposed abortion but publicly defended the laws of the land.

Or maybe even Kennedy when he said his religion would not rule although there was no abortion but there were laws on marriage.

Not that I am in favor of them receiving communiion but it has been policy.

What else is Cardinal Wuerl accused of?

It is not only about Wuerl but Pope Francis and anyone else who potentially knew about priests who acted out?

These are all old cases, correct?

I was less interested in Wuehrl being punished than Fr. Guarnizo being vindicated. Not in a mean way either. Think he’d be an exceptionally good and faithful Bishop or Archbishop.

Turn the bad news into good to my way of thinking. 😇

The Holy Father wrote an open glowing letter to His Eminence…apparently as far as the Holy Father is concerned, His Eminence is a model bishop.

Have not really followed this story about communion and Father Guarnizo.

Is this the same Father Guarnizo who also argued that a vote against Trump was not necessarily wrong - the lesser of two evils and that the church never talks about lesser of two evils 2 days before election.

It has been taken seriously. These are very old cases. One of the public accusers in PA was 83 years old.

In Pope Francis’s acceptance of Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl’s resignation from the See of Washington, DC, we see an unmistakable pattern emerging. By accepting Wuerl’s resignation, but also keeping him on as Apostolic Administrator, the Pope shows he is working to a particular modus operandi .

There seem to be three basic steps: (1) ignore criticism and impugn critics’ motives; (2) when that becomes impracticable make a big show of doing something, without actually doing much of anything; (3) if necessary, remove a high-profile figure, but not really.

The New York Times reports Wuerl as saying he expects to keep his roles in various powerful dicasteries, including the Congregation for Bishops.
It looks like regardless of how long he actually stays in Washington, Cardinal Wuerl will retain significant influence in the American Church.

I think that there is more to the Fr Guarnizo story than you are aware of.
