WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, from the College of Cardinals.
Pope Francis has also imposed on Cardinal McCarrick suspension ad divinis and directs him to observe a life of prayer and penance in seclusion until the completion of the canonical process.

The statement of this resignation and these stipulations was publicized in Rome on July 28, 2018.

According to the Washington Post:
McCarrick is the highest ranked U.S. Catholic clergy member to ever be removed from ministry due to sexual abuse allegations, and the first cardinal to fully resign his position since 1927.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, from Scotland, renounced the rights and privileges of his position after a string of accusations in 2013 about sexual misconduct. But he did not officially depart the College of Cardinals, and Pope Francis only accepted O’Brien’s resignation two years after the allegations came out.

McCarrick was obviously talented and well liked. It’s a rather sad end to what would have otherwise been a distinguished career.

There’s an archbishop in Australia in trouble for a cover up. Apparently the PM wants him to resign. Or wants the Pope to sack him?

ROME, July 28, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Theodore McMarrick from the College of Cardinals, and has ordered that he remain confined to a yet to be disclosed location until he faces canonical trial.

A short statement issued this morning by the Vatican reads:

Yesterday evening the Holy Father received the letter in which Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington (U.S.A.), presented his resignation as a member of the College of Cardinals.

Pope Francis accepted his resignation from the cardinalate and has ordered his suspension from the exercise of any public ministry, together with the obligation to remain in a house yet to be indicated to him, for a life of prayer and penance until the accusations made against him are examined in a regular canonical trial.

In June, McCarrick, 88, was found to be credibly accused of abusing a teenager nearly 50 years ago, and of additional allegations of sexual abuse and harassment over several decades. Victims include three adults who were young priests or seminarians when McCarrick reportedly abused them.

Last week, a Virginia man, now in his 60s, filed a police report alleging that McCormick began sexually abusing him from the time he was 11 years old. The man said the serial abuse began when McCormick . . .

This is really huge news. I’m a bit surprised it isn’t being discussed more than it is.
 
I agree. I am thinking it is this forum.
As far as most are concerned here it is just a problem with “gay” clergy in the Church. If we get rid of them then the problem will go away. :roll_eyes:

This is a problem that has been going on since the beginning of the Church. Gay/straight- it doesn’t matter- this is an abuse of power and status no one wants to talk about it because no one wants to admit that truth.
