Pope Francis appoints Cardinal Cañizares as the new Archbishop of Valencia

The Vatican’s chief liturgical official will return to Spain as Archbishop of Valencia, it was announced today. Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera has been the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments since 2008.

His replacement at the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has not yet been announced but after Pope Francis’s election there was speculation that the Italian Archbishop Piero Marini would be given the role.

The controversial Archbishop Marini advised Pope John Paul II on litrugical matters during his papacy.

Ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Valencia in 1970, Cardinal Cañizares served as Bishop of Ávila (1992-2002) and Archbishop of Toledo (2002-08) before Pope Benedict appointed him curial prefect.

He was made a cardinal in 2006.
 
Why is AB Marini controversial?

No matter…lots and lots of changes seem to be happening rather quickly for the otherwise slow-moving Vatican, eh? Trust in the Lord - all things will be used to accomplish His own Divine purpose.

Archbp Marini is generally considered to be the most liberal/modern possible choice for this position. He would represent the opposite of Pope Benedict’s liturgical reforms.

His name only surfaced for the post in recent days, the succession to the retiring Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, 78, had been long and widely thought to be destined for the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera. Instead, the 68 year-old theologian – known as El Ratzingerino (the “Little Ratzinger”) for his close ties to Benedict XVI – has been dispatched to succeed Osoro in Valencia, Spain’s second-largest local church, which likewise happens to be his hometown.

The situation is especially confusing because there are two Marini’s involved with the Liturgy.

The one being discussed here is Piero Marini, who was the Papal MC for JPII (and who is very progressive/liberal).

And there is also Guido Marini, who was Benedict’s Papal MC, and is currently Papal MC for Francis. Guido Marini is right in line with Benedict’s liturgical reforms.

So, there are two Marini’s, and they are very different from each other.
 
First emphatically pro-life Cardinal Burke gets the half-axe (still top canon lawyer) presumably for having zero people skills and being too strict about marriage being forever, then Cardinal Canizares, who wants to tone done the grab fest “kiss of peace”, gets demoted. After mass firings there’s only one original Cardinal left at the Vatican bank. Interesting…:rotfl:

Seriously, I saw an article about this from the Associated Press and it was “slanted” to imply that Cardinal Canizares was going to change quite a few things. Then, I read Whispers in the Loggia (which I trust), and Rocco Palmo noted that Canizares was often nicknamed “little Benedict” because Cardinal Ratzinger was one of his mentors.

This is one reason I take much of what the secular media (particularly sources like the Associated Press, Reuters, Yahoo News, and the all-time worst outlet is B as in B and S as in S NBC) says about Pope Francis I with a grain of salt.

Secular media outlets often send the low man on the totem pole to cover a religion story, and then the low man has to write it such that it is out by the deadline, so it’s often rushed and ill-researched. While sports reporting is often specialized, religion reporting (other than EWTN and in Protestant circles, something like the 700 Club) is not.

However, Greg Burke is an exception, and Mr. Greg Burke knows what he is talking about when reporting about religion. Some secular outlets carry his reporting from Rome.

I do trust Fr. Jonathan Morris, but I do cringe a little when Fox News brings on Fr. Beck from the Paulists, or Fr. Tim Reese from Georgetown (some of that was done during the selection of Pope Francis I, and Bill O’Reilly sometimes brings Fr. Beck on his show).

I don’t think we should consider it a demotion. What can be more important for a bishop than to pastor a local Church? The Church shouldn’t be seen as a corporation with Vatican prelates occupying VP positions above the mere “branch managers” running dioceses. It is a communion of particular Churches.

Deacon Douglas P. McManaman is the author, he seems a good enough Catholic person. But I don’t see a Nihil Obstat or Imprimatur attached… and I am wary of prayers without them that come from untrustworthy sources. It’s just too risky.
