Thank you for posting these photos! I have not seen them before. 🙂

Your welcome! This is actually in the Ukranian Church too! This is beautiful to see a nice Roman/Byzantine mix!
Yes, I noticed the blue and yellow Ukrainian flag. I believe that is Ukrainian Catholic priest Father Chmil next to the future pope - the priest whose divine liturgies the young Jorge Bergoglio used to attend as a student and which made an impression upon him.

I think the photos must be from some church in Argentina which has a sizable Ukrainian population.

I agree. Argentina has a great population of Eastern Catholicism itself such as the Maronites for example, as well as the Byzantines! What I love about being Catholic is that there are so many different flavors to the Church due to culture and style of expression to worship God which is amazing! As a Latin Rite Catholic I have nothing but respect for the East, especially the Eastern Orthodox Churches and the Oriental Orthodox Churches.

God Bless,

Agreed; it truly is a Universal Church. 🙂

God Bless,

There is a video of Pope John Paul II celebrating the Divine Liturgy on YouTube . I wish His Holiness celebrates a Divine Liturgy during his Pontificate.

Why would we want someone from a different Liturgical tradition to celebrate according to the Rite of another tradition? 🤷

Because he was also the bishop for that other tradition in his diocese? He was the Ordinary for the Eastern Catholics in Argentina, so it’s likely that he was merely exercising his office. Furthermore, it looks like the Ukranian Catholic Exarch is the one presiding, not him. However, his vestments are quite a confusing mix, I must say. 😃

This has actually been noted in another thread. As before, I would like to describe my confusion over his choice of vestments. 😛
Yeah, you’re right… I believe that technically, if he is concelebrating he should be wearing Latin vestments, as they are appropriate to his rite.

Unless he is bi-ritual. I believe I heard that he served as the bishop of eastern Catholics in his diocese or country, or served them in some other capacity. I’m pretty sure this is true, and I’d be surprised, then, if he wasn’t bi-ritual.

But this is totally incoherent. Forgive me if I mess up the Byzantine terms, but he’s wearing a Mandyas, which is not worn for the DL (like a Cope), which calls into doubt whether he’)s actually concelebrating. Because if he isn’t, he should probably be dressed in Latin Choir Dress. He’s also wearing an Omophorion rather than the equivalent Latin Pallium. Yet…he’s wearing a Latin mitre, which makes no sense at all. Looks like the same mitre he continues to use exclusively as Pope. Wonder what the story behind it is. Yeah, this is very confusing…
