“Don’t trust the media spin, he’s actually not saying anything new.”
“This isn’t doctrine- just the Pope’s opinion”.
“I wonder if the Pope even wrote this. Maybe there is a left-wing lobby in the Vatican or something responsible for this.”

I’m looking forward to the Pope articulating thoughtful Catholic principles on the relationship between the human person and the earth. Hopefully, it will draw all Catholics (and people of good will) towards a greater respect for both.

I’m looking forward to the Pope articulating thoughtful Catholic principles on the relationship between the human person and the earth. Hopefully, it will draw all Catholics (and people of good will) towards a greater respect for both.

Evangelium Gaudium was a beautiful document but discusion on it has fizzled out. Too bad. I think we still need to work on that but I certainly do welcome a document on the ecology. I am eager to read it.

Since predictions are in the air, I’ll add a few:

1. People are to be seen as precious gifts created in the image and likeness of God, not as insufferably numerous CO2 generators.
2. Encouragement will be given to investigation of the interconnectedness of nature while still retaining the unique place of mankind. This will be contrasted with the dueling errors of our time in which A.) Man is an evil interloper in the natural world, or B.) The desires and even whims of man trump every other consideration and God will ensure that no irreversible damage will occur to the world.
3. Criticism will be placed on those who exploit the natural resources of an area without taking proper precautions against environmental damages and without ensuring that the local population shares in the benefits of that exploitation.
4. I don’t think there will be a lot of CAF hedging and wiggling because I highly doubt that the Holy Father will take specific positions on specific issues subject to prudential judgment. Instead, he will endorse principled efforts to align human endeavors with natural systems. Pundits and ringils will undoubtedly attempt to spin such general exhortations into commands to send their money to AlGore Carbon Credits, LLC and denounce any curmudgeon CAFers who demur. Just like B16 made condoms “morally OK” and Francis scolded prolifers to “stop obsessing.” So right back atcha, ringil: I predict that you spin such an encyclical more than other CAF folk!
