A rare opportunity!? For Pete’s sake! The man is Pope! It isn’t a rare opportunity for any Pope at all!

The only really major appointment out of all of these is Philadelphia, where Chaput will certainly be replaced shortly after he turns 75. It will probably go to Bp. McEllroy from San Diego, who is cut from the same cloth as Cupich, Tobin, and Gregory. So that will be a major change. Most of Pope Francis’ appointments to minor dioceses haven’t been too controversial so far. So NCR will be disappointed if they’re expecting a bunch of Cupich clones to be appointed to the vacant positions. None of them are going to be like the late Bp. Morlino, but I wouldn’t expect pride masses to start popping up all over the country either (hopefully).

Yeah, Chaput is pretty much the poster-boy for the kind of bishop Pope Francis and his advisors/supporters really don’t like (despite being pretty well-respected by everyone else).

Good point though. When Pope Francis follows the customary process–which is more collegial-- the choices aren’t that bad. But the ones apparently hand-picked by the Pope with the advice of his special friends are obvious (see also who gets elected by the US bishops to go to synods, versus who are appointed directly by the Pope). That’s why the allegations concerning McCarrick’s influence rang true.

It probably won’t be as disastrous as the Paul VI/Jean Jadot days, but we’ll probably take a few steps back for a while before things resume improving.

Coming? We have been living it since 2013. And the NCR has never left the 1968- 70’s Their paper is trash. N- stands for Never Catholic Reporting.

Sad day when Archbishop Chaput retires. Someone was terrified to make him cardinal. Maybe a few were terrified.
