What happens when they run out of room for all these mosaics? I’ve always wondered.

Thank you for posting this. We were at St. Paul’s a few weeks ago for a performance of the Mozart Requiem, and we looked to see if the new medallion was there. It wasn’t, of course. Pope Benedict’s is beautiful, and a good likeness, and I am glad to see that Pope Francis’s is as well. I would’t worry about them running out of space. There seems to be plenty for many more medallions.

Will someone please find out the answer. This moderator is very curious as well. :yup:

Thank God, it’s a really good piece of art, very well done and classy. Very tasteful. I’d love to go through the Basilica one day for a few hours and just stare at the papal portraits.

I’m constantly on the lookout for pieces of art and architectural examples that are simple, yet classy and not, “ZOMG, look at me! I am the aesthetic stepchild of 20th century anti-Catholic philosophers!!!”

Maybe they’ll be placed outside the walls of St. Paul Outside the walls 😉

Just kidding. Side note, one of the monks at our abbey was loaned to St. Paul Outside the Walls for several years and still goes back to help out from time to time. He’s also my (new) confessor, maybe I can ask him next time I need to go to confession (which being Advent should be pretty soon!).

As I said, it looks to me as if there is plenty of room for new medallions. We are occasionally invited to receptions at our embassy to the Holy See. The next time I see Cardinal Harvey, I will ask him and post his reply.

I was there last year and they have room for at least 100 more popes.😃
Wow. That’s really interesting. It’s tough to get an idea of the layout and how much room there is. That’s great to hear! Still an interesting question. I suppose we’ll have to worry about it in another 1,000 years or so 🙂
