Pope Francis rode bus back to the hotel instead of Papal limo!

He was offered a limo, and preferred to ride with his brothers who had just elected him. Personally I think it was a touching gesture of humility and unity towards them and a recognition of their support of him; the role of superior as “servant to the servants of the Lord”.

I think we need to trust the Holy Spirit on this one! I think the Holy Spirit got it very, very right.
I agree with you completely, but give it a little time and I am sure we will see threads form those who do not.🤷

I know! He is so humble that he has to make a statement out of it at every move…😉

How is it called? Do not let your left hand know the good what your right hand does…👍
Yeah I am sure he’s going out of his way to be showy in this. Come on
And BTW, if he is using his actions to make a statement about this: it’s a very good statement. A statement of charity and humility.

Right, a kind of lead by example thing. If even the supreme pontiff is willing to give up honors that are due to him then how much more should the rest of us try to follow his example in humility. It is an excellent and ever-necessary lesson, and all the more powerful as it is coming through his actions, not just words. 👍

Just something I wasn’t able to understand in the following:-

By the d. underlined above, you meant he did not say to just preach with lives and faith instead of actions? I wasn’t sure what you meant by that last point.
Oops, Mea culpa. That should have been “To” not “No”
Even though I understood why the Popes road around in the bullet proof Mercedes, it almost seemed unnatural (not he best word) because I could never see Jesus doing it. However, now that we have a Pope who may not use that vehicle, I am worried for him, but very proud he is willing to show he is putting his life into God’s hands. Not that the other Popes didn’t, I just think this maybe something very needed in the Church right now. I pray he has many faithful years as our Pope.

Although he was second in voting when Pope Benedict was chosen, I can tell you most Jesuits didn’t see this coming, at least the ones at the school I work didn’t. In fact, I ask a couple of our priest if there was a chance to have a Pope from the Jesuit order in our life time, and they said no way. We are all very happy about it.
We could have a contingent of undercover Swiss guards form around him and keep an eye on quick movements…

… at least until someone gets slammed to the ground for moving too quickly for a pen.

I feel for the poor guy having to get used to some of the trappings of office with which he would probably rather do without. Still, I am excited about the choice like I haven’t been in, oh, about eight years.
He’s giving the Swiss Guards a run for their money. Did you folks hear how he got to St. Mary Major?

Apparently, that was not on the schedule. He pulled that out of his hat on the Loggia. To get the pope from point A to point B requires some coordination between Vatican police and Roman Police. Apparently, these arrangements were not in place, because they did not expect this. Normally, a newly elected pope celebrates mass with the cardinals his first morning.

The night before he said to the cardinals, “Are you guys going to be around?” They were a little confused. They told him that they were there for him. To which he responded that he wanted to change the mass from the morning to the evening so that he could go pray to the Madonna. That was another surprise for security. He pulled this one out of his zuchetto at 11:00 PM or so.

The next morning, he, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome and another cardinal boarded a service vehicle used by Vatican police to drive him to Saint Mary Major. When he got there, he got out of the car at the side door. If you have ever been to St. Mary Major, the side door is an alley. He walked in through the side door. The Dominicans were waiting for him at the front door. They were looking out for a motorcade.

That’s when he asked the driver to stop by the hotel to pickup his belongings and pay his bill. He would not allow the hotel to put the bill on the Vatican’s tab.

Today, he pulled another one on them. He insisted on taking the bus again. He just walked right past the car that was waiting for him.

I love it, but he’s going to drive the Swiss Guard absolutely bonkers. 😃

I know. And it seems to me it would be so much more humble to just obey the protocol …
Like: How do you guys run things around here? Oh, I am suposed to take this limo? Ok, let’s go…
Your nitpicking and attempting to find fault with Pope Francis in this and other threads is uncharitable and disrespectful.

Oh well, looks like he just might be too unpredictable in his movements for any potential troublemakers also.
I never thought of it that way. LOL

You have never been a religious male, have you? The man is a consecrated religious, not a diocesan priest. Regulars don’t get driven around. We take buses, trains, walk or drive ourselves. It’s not about humility. It’s about that which is contrary to our worldview.

Just watch the difference between a bishop, archbishop or cardinal who is a regular and one who is a secular and you’ll see what I mean. Read back on the regular popes vs the secular popes.

I don’t know - but if occurred to me he must have developed fairly good street smarts hanging around goodness knows what parts of Buenos Aires. And one thing self-defence teachers discuss is the fact that an attacker will usually look for any predictable routine about your movements.

Yes, but sometimes (As with Archduke Ferdinand and Gavrilo Princip ) the wrong man in the right place can make all the difference in the world. A sandwich started WWI. Don’t assume unpredictability means security.

If he’s true to his patron saint, he will certainly be a man on the move. Our Holy Father was not a man who sat around too long. He was a horrific administrator, but he was a wonderful troubadour. He was always on the go. I believe that we may have been the first religious to pray the Divine Office in motion. It was not unusual to see the friars walking from one town to another while praying the Divine Office, rather than stop at a church to pray it. It’s still done to this day.

Maybe Pope Francis has taken lessons from St. Francis. 🤷

The man refuses to use limos and private cars. He also refuses to be called Eminence, Excellency, Bishop or Cardinal. He has been simply “Jorge” or “Father Jorge”.
I would hate for him to be seriously wounded or kidnapped because he takes a bus. How terrible would that be? So, I hope that he will let his security staff assist with protecting him, and that he can make the transition to traveling by safer means. I respect his rejection of materialism, and leading by example. But I would prefer that he be able to continue to do so for a long time, without his risking some terrorist group or kook nabbing him or blowing him up along with a bus load of other innocent people.

With great authority comes great responsibility. My opinion, is that one of his now is to protect himself from imminent danger which such a person obviously attracts in this crazy world we live in.

He should have taken the limo; he’s the Pope afterall.

Can I assume Pope Francis won’t be using the sedia gestatoria? 🤷

Well, if he didn’t use it, I think it will cause more confusion and lead people to think that “Pope = first among equals” now. But it is nothing that cannot be rectified by another Pope after Pope Francis. As I mentioned in another thread just now, this shows the importance of traditions. The traditions keep us from causing confusion. The traditions carry expressive power. When the Pope or anyone else decides to do things differently, that is why it immediately makes us think of change with respect to the nature of the office. We start to infer the object of this change by the alternate actions that took place. Which in this case leads us to think that Pope Francis indeed wants to be just a Bishop.

But then again, he rode the bus with the Cardinals and ate with them. He didn’t eat with the Bishops 😃

Anyway, only thing we have to worry about is him pronouncing/teaching the Papacy to be just the first among equals. That is impossible since, THANKS TO VATICAN II - LUMEN GENTIUM, the role and power of the Pope is BINDING DOCTRINE on the faithful. So rest easy brothers and sisters.

Not to mention Vatican I.

I’m sure that he’ll reach some kind of a happy compromise with them. He’s not a capricious man. Holy people are not out to make life impossible for others. We have to back down here too. We’re too insistent on maintaining a status quo as if this man had no rights. How fair is that on our part? He is a human being and has human rights.

He may be the servant of the servants of God, but he’s not our employee. Some posts on this thread are starting to sound as if they want to dictated to this man. That’s inappropriate too. As St. Francis would tell his brothers. We are no one. Our feelings and opinions are worthless when it comes to that of the pope.

He is not the first pope to fight the establishment. Let us not forget Pope Pius X. He eliminated a great deal of the pomp surrounding the pope. What was handed down to us until the time of Pope Paul VI was a fraction of what was before Pope Pius X. The first thing that Pope Pius X objected to was eating alone.

Pope John XXIII roamed the streets of Rome in a black cassock. He also had the housekeeping staff at the Vatican eat dinner with him. He liked to sneak out to buy ielatto.

Pope Paul VI traveled to the USA.

Pope John Paul II went skiing to the Alps and no one except his closest associates knew about it. He did not take a motorcade. He rarely used the motorcade. He usually traveled around the city in a limo without too much fanfare.

There are ways of getting around this without calling a lot of attention to oneself.

As I have posted on several places. THE MAN IS A JESUIT. He is a religious. Do not try to make a religious fit into the mold of a secular priest. It won’t work. We, religious, are taught to avoid that mold at all costs. It’s drilled into us to avoid it. He’s going to fight whatever makes him look like a secular pope. The Vatican staff is going to have to come up with something that will keep him safe and be appropriate for a religious.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but are some of you resisting the fact that our new pope is a consecrated man?
