Hello All,

As previous post have discussed Pope Francis and the abortion issue I wanted to ask your thoughts on the Telegraph article. I had a range of emotions while reading it but wanted to know your thoughts. How would you respond? What would you say?

That is why such moves by the pope are unwise. They create false impressions.

Anyway, screw the liberal media. Who cares about what they say? We know the truth and will never forget it.

You seem to be as liberal with truth as the media you assail…by saying the Pope is “unwise” you imply that while you know the truth, the Pope does not.🤷

My initial thought is that the author has a very poor understanding of Catholic doctrine regarding excommunication, absolution, and the “terrible sin of abortion”, to use her words. Did anyone else think the author sounded sarcastic?

A few of the news stories I’ve read about this make it seem like those participating in abortion could never have been forgiven ever even if they wanted to. what a load of crock! All these outlets also make it seem like everyone HAS TO WAIT until the year of mercy to begin before they are forgiven! WTH?!? If people are really penitent, they can seek forgiveness TODAY and they would be forgiven.

The whole situation makes me angry.

What false impressions…it’s plainly clear that he is showing Christs love and compassion by allowing women who are estranged from the church by their abortion to be absolved from that sin by a priest…the Pope has the authority given to him by Jesus Christ…“whose sins you forgive are forgiven”…by whose authority do you declare the Pope is “unwise”

I would say that it is an opinion piece written from a perspective of total, willful and serene ignorance, for the purpose of demeaning the Catholic Church and faith.

Have You read the article? It claims that Pope had to “concede” to the developments and necessities of the time. This is obviously a false impression.

We all have right to disagree with our shepherds on the matter of policy. Of course, the Pope by definition know better in the field of doctrine, but this is not the issue here.

I don’t know where you get the impression the Pope had to “concede” (your word… not in this article) anything…he is offering a time of mercy and absolution to those women who have had an abortion…if you had read the article properly you would have also seen that it stated that the Pope still considered abortion a sin…he didn’t “concede” ie…surrender…yield or admit to something as fact after first denying it…there is no false impression.,in fact here in the US a priest can already grant absolution and also lift the excommunication if delegated by his Bishop.

My goodness that’s a snarky article. I only made it as far as the part where they say that women are thrown out of the Church or some such nonsense (no mention of those that are more culpable, i.e. boyfriends, doctors, nurses, etc.).

I really don’t get the “Welcome to the 20th Century bit”. Did everybody else make it easier to remove an excommunication for abortion back in the 20th century? I wasn’t really aware it was an issue anywhere else except the Catholic Church regardless of Century.
