Pope Francis to release much anticipated Synod on the Family exhortation in March

Pete Baklinski

ROME, January 28, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – A much anticipated document written by Pope Francis that some think could chart the future course of the barque of Peter through the waters of sexuality, marriage, and family is set to be released this coming March.

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, says that the pope’s post-synodal apostolic exhortation following the Synod on the Family is scheduled to be published by the end of March. The news comes from Il Sismografo, a semi-official Vatican news aggregator supervised by the Secretariat of State…

Wow, that’s pretty fast, in Church terms.

I’m waiting with bated breath.

“According to Pentin, an unnamed but “reliably informed source” who is a moral theologian told him that the draft “deeply disturbed” him because it “calls into question the natural moral law.””

Wow, this could be a bombshell for the Church…

With all due respect, this sounds like Vatican gossip to me.

However even that blog edited what another blogger said which was telling what some other unnamed source said. But left off the latter 1/2 of the paragraph from the other blog. What the other blogger wrote was, "One reliably informed source, a recognized moral theologian who has seen the draft, said he was “deeply disturbed” by the text as it “calls into question the natural moral law”. A senior Vatican official said he had heard the draft was good, but that was “some time ago”. He said he expects it to be similar to the Ordinary Synod’s final report, almost all of which the synod fathers passed unanimously. Like I said, it sounded like gossip and from what we see here that is exactly what it is.

The original source is Edward Pentin who is an experienced and reliable journalist. The final report is itself a troubling document, especially paragraph 84 that implies remarried divorcees who have not regularised their situation can still be in a state of grace (I’m willing to substantiate this if anyone asks).

For the record, an Apostolic Exhortation is not an ex cathedra document, and should it permit Communion for remarried divorcees this will be a disciplinary, not doctrinal decision, hence not per se binding on Catholics. A Catholic will be free to respectfully and publically oppose it whilst remaining in good standing with the Church. If things go this far that’s certainly what I will be doing.

Indeed. Sometimes it has taken a couple of years following a synod before we see the apostolic exhortation. Of course, this time around, it is the fruit of two synods, one of which started 16 months ago. So there was a little bit of a head start, I suppose. But I think Pope Francis also realizes that people are more anxiously awaiting this document than those that followed other synods.
