A while ago, Pope Francis talked about how Islam isn’t a religion of violence, but Catholic Answers and many other Catholic figures teach otherwise.

Has the Catholic Answers folks talked about Pope Francis’s views?

From what I’ve seen, Pope Francis is encouraging the idea that Islam is a religion of peace, and that there are violent fundamentalists in any religion, but my current view is that Islam is a religion born out of violence from a false prophet that used his new found religion to gain power in the Arab nations. I don’t think I can reconcile, in any way, that Islam teaches Ishmael was going to be the sacrifice instead of Isaac. It feels like the entire Islam religion just falls apart if it is actually Isaac. Also, please don’t see my views as animosity towards the Muslim people. The people are not to be blamed for their faiths, like Protestants, Mormons, or Jehovah’s Witness, etc.

God did take care of Ishmael in Genesis 21:14-21, so maybe this is why Pope Francis is doing this?

Not really. The church teaches that like all religion we accept the truth that they have in their faith and we do not accept some of the distorted teachings. As with all Faith’s we accept the truth that they do have. But they do not have the fulness of truth. Buddha for instance many truths but you hear nothing of the Eucharist etc. You cannot concern yourself with others opinions go with the true teaching of the RCC. What the pope in my words are this a nuts a nut. where did the teaching of the RCC tell these sick priests to do what they did. It’s not Catholic teaching.its wrong. like where did the Muslim teaching tell these nuts to get on a plane and kill and bomb us it don’t. What I am saying do not put the sins of priest at the foot of Christ and his true church. And don’t put the sins of the bombers at the foot of muslims Faith

I’m not so much concerned about the modern terrorism as I am with the founder, Muhammad, teaching that all had to be conquered for their god or be killed, also teaching that women are slaves, polygyny is good, and sexual relations with a preteen is good (well he doesn’t teach this last point, he just does it).

The Catholic Church’s teachings and beliefs remain good regardless of the actions and sins of individual Catholics, priest or otherwise. On the flipside, even if there is the most pious Muslim by Catholic standards, it doesn’t change how Islam believes in some pretty bad things.

This is a type of evangelization. You speak to them as the religion of Peace and hopefully it will sink in.
There is a story about a missionary who went to an island of canibals. He worked there for many years. One day he took a vacation back to his home and was asked about his success. He said yes I have had some success. I have gotten them to only eat fishermen on Fridays.

Excellent with fava beans….and a nice chianti.

PS: Non-alcoholic, of course.

I agree. There is much of the teachings of Muhammad are indeed the complete opposite of the teachings of the Bible. What Muhammad did is what millions of people have done with the word of God since the time of Christ. They take his teachings out of context for what they are and make themselves self proclaimed prophets and convince people God told them these things. Which we know are incorrect for 2 reasons God warned us about people doing this when he said do not interpret the word outside of the church we do not have the power of the holy Spirit to do such. And the second proof is these teachings are in direct conflict with the teachings of Christ.

Historically, Ishmael has nothing to do with Islam. Ishmael had been dead for two thousand years or more when Mohammed created the brand-new religion of Islam.

Well said! The softening towards non-Catholicism through the years is one of the central criticisms of our traditional brothers and sisters. We used to take a rather hard stance against modern day prophets (i.e., be them Muhammad or otherwise). We have softened considerably towards them.

Yes to an extent this is a type of evangelism which was started by saint John Paul ll he taught it is better to start off with what we agree with and have in common and pray together then to start of condemning them for what they do wrong. He chose to use the power of prayer which he felt was more powerful then guns and rapes and hatred. He was also called the devil in his time when he was showed praying with others he was in disagrement with and now is considered a saint. Don’t ever doubt the power of prayer. He has brought millions of other Faith’s to Christ. As stated maybe saved 5 out of 7.;
But according to Christ to save even one is a win

That’s correct. Condemning someone for ‘doing wrong’, when they believe they are ‘doing right’ is hardly the better way. Of course, the very best approach is to be a shining example of what it is to be - in your case - a Christian; a beacon that attracts people to Christ.

Yeah, I understand that point. You can’t make changes without love, but I think Pope Francis’s words comes off as saying that “Islam is about love” TO a lot of Catholics when it clearly has a lot of hate in their beliefs. Another thing is that Islam teaches to deceive the enemies as well. Anyway, your story reminded me about this recent news.

Doing God’s work may be good, but God gave us a head to stop us from doing things that will kill us.

Well the church has dealt with heretical ideas before with promptness, it’s just that the Muslims fought with war to maintain their religion in the beginning. I think Muhammad surely got his hands on the Bible and reinterpreted it to fit his needs, calling Jesus and Abraham all muslims, which is absurd.
Historically, Ishmael has nothing to do with Islam. Ishmael had been dead for two thousand years or more when Mohammed created the brand-new religion of Islam.
According to scholars, Ishmael has plenty to do with Islam. Muhammad started the religion to conquer and unite all of the Arab lands. They are all Ishmael’s “children” as much as the Israelites are Isaac’s children. Muhammad used Ishmael to further his agenda of unity.

They are all Ishmael’s “children” as much as the Israelites are Isaac’s children.
If you are drawing – as you seem to be – a direct analogy between the Ishmael-Islam connection in one case and the Isaac-Judaism connection in the other, does that mean you reject the Biblical account of God’s promise to Abraham, which can be summarized in two sentences:

• Abraham obeyed God’s command to circumcise Isaac (Gen 21:4), making him the founding father of Judaism

• When the children of Israel were enslaved by the Egyptians (Ex 1:11-14), they were already Jews, in the sense that they already practiced the monotheistic religion of which Abraham had been the founding father

I read this a long time ago cannot remember where. but here it is. Muhammad could not read he would listen to the priest preach and would misquote the Bible all the time they would call him on it. He finally left went to his village etc where they believed his truth was the teachings of God.

It’s even clearer than that.

God said

Exodus 2:24
And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

Leviticus 26:42
then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

therefore, Re: the covenant and the correct direction

God -------> Abraham -------> Isaac --------> Jacob----> Through Sara in that direction

NOT

Abraham--------> Ishmael through Hagar (but this is the direction Muslims claim)

Almost forgot

Gal 4:
21 Tell me, you who desire to be under law, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. 24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,
“Rejoice, O barren one that dost not bear; break forth and shout, thou who art not in travail; for the desolate hath more children than she who hath a husband.”
28 Now we,[c] brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now. 30 But what does the scripture say? “Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brethren, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

We are still waiting for the quote where Francis states that Islam is a religion of peace.

Peace is from Christ. There is no peace in the world without peace from within. Unfortunately, many self proclaimed Christians don’t know peace.

Pax Christi.

I don’t, you are simply asking questions. I am very blessed in the city I live in, where the Muslim community has repeatedly sponsored ecumenical activities, inviting local clergy from many denominations and faiths to join them. Some of my Catholic relatives, along with the bishop, have attended these events. The community have also taken out full sized ads on billboards and the sides of buses wishing we Christians a Peaceful and Merry Christmas. This is clearly a sincere attempt at sowing love in order to defuse hostility. Either that or they’re really up to something seriously sinister. LOL

Maybe we have some confusion, but God took care of Ishmael when they were sent away as a promise to Abraham and God said, in Genesis 21:13, And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.

Scott Hahn’s extensive research into Islam showed him that the current Israel-Palestinian war fueled today dates all the way back to Abraham because Abraham fell into sin at Sarah’s behest. I’ve heard this from several scholars.

I had trouble finding it when it was first requested, but I figured it out. I don’t know how accurate it is, and this link isn’t the same source I found (because it’s so hard to find the original source I saw now that Pope Francis is visiting the UAE.
