Pope Francis washes feet

This.

For those who may be struggling, pray for Faith and Hope. Heck, make an Act of Faith and an Act of Hope, everyday if you have to. And be open to the graces of Faith and Hope that ultimately come from God.

If you don’t have Faith and/or Hope, then the rest really becomes meaningless, or it becomes all about “I think, I want, I believe, I, I, I”.

Here’s the other thing that people need to understand: In the end it really doesn’t matter what I think. The Fullness of Truth Objectively subsists in the Catholic Church, and whether or not you choose to believe it is, frankly, irrelevant. Jesus asks us to follow Him, not peer-review what goes on.

The real danger of what happened in the Modern period is what’s called the “inward turn of modernity”. This is the enduring legacy of Descartes: that everything is referenced back to the “I” and that I become the final arbitrator of what is truth. This is what leads to Protestant ideas: the idea that I need to be able to fully understand something before it is confirmed as truth, and that it stands as nothing until I say so.

How many threads have we seen in this forum that, at their essence, say something like “I can’t reconcile with <some-pre-VII-document/practice/tradition>”. Frankly speaking, such questions are ultimately not valid. If you have Faith and Hope (which have their ultimate source in God), then you know that that is not even a question, because we know that God is not a deceiver nor a trickster. To presume that I have to be able to reconcile or understand all these things inverts the pyramid and puts me at the top as if I were a shareholder demanding an explanation of a company management (the Curia) or CEO (the Pope), which is not how the Church operates nor how it ought to operate (and Thank God for that).

And that is ultimately the goal of the Evil One, to try and get you to put you at the centre. To try and get you to be judge. And he really doesn’t have to work all that hard, because as the old saying goes, “pride goes before the fall”. All he really has to do is whisper "What do you think of this?", and as soon as you answer “I think” or “in my opinion” then you are already caught in the trap that is the Supremacy of the Individual.

You know what I realized while writing this? Protestantism is essentially (and ironically) work-based. It’s all about their ability to keep their church doctrinally pure, and when they believe it’s not happening then its their job to go and break off. No Hope in God’s grace or protection, but only in themselves as guardians and watchman and final arbitrators.

Yes, yes, yes. EXACTLY what I think. I am perfectly willing to wait; it hasn’t been THAT long. . .but the media just harps and harps on the ‘one note’ social-justice and tries to imply that Pope Francis’ own personal (and Jesuit) sensitivities are ONLY related to social justice and that previous Popes were not, and that ANYBODY who questions not Pope Francis per se, but the media interpretations thereof, are automatically ‘anti-social justice’ and ‘pomp loving, hateful, greedy swine’.
As far as us “waiting” for the orthodoxy, the Vatican sort of acknowledged this the other day when they said Pope Francis is in a honeymoon period as far as the media, and that it will end when he talks policy on moral issues (I dont know the exact quote). I think this is the reassurance some of us are waiting for.

What it comes down to for me is this. Generally speaking, I think the Church is too divided between “liberals” who serve the poor but dont hold to orthodoxy, and “conservatives” who hold to orthodoxy but are not involved enough socially (I know Im making sweeping generalizations here, but you know what I mean). My HOPE for Pope Francis is that he will be like Saint Francis, who for me embodies the best of both of those worlds, passion for serving others AND orthodoxy.
I do know what you mean and I have exactly the same hope. I also think that this is the most likely explanation for his taking the name “Francis” - and making sure the world knew it was for Saint Francis of Assisi, specifically.

He needs us. It’s just that simple in my mind, our Pope needs us so much to have faith and to send prayer. We need our reverent Mass to participate in the great Mystery, so all have this moment of mysticism, even when they don’t know that’s what it is. And we need to practice charity, self-sacrifice, love in the acts of caring, we need this all because we won’t survive without it all. Our Pope needs us to believe without question, because I don’t think the controversies are done, but will increase.

Nothing that’s easy is in our future.

There wouldn’t be stickies about this on at least two forums here if people hadn’t been saying things like that. I don’t think it is wise to ask for quotes. A poster who said something along those lines last night has been banned. Lets all avoid getting into trouble over this.

Fair enough. However, I don’t think most folks are outright saying the Pope is wrong. They may be questioning, but I don’t think they are out to “make trouble”.

I certainly don’t think you are “out to make trouble” and I don’t want you to get in trouble. I hope you are able to find comfort no matter what folks in the media, on blogs, etc are saying.

Oh I didn’t think you did. We’re good. 😉 And thank you. I’m working on things.

I believe many of these traditional Catholics, not in communion with the Holy See revealed thier true nature in doing what they did.
They alert the Catholic-hating media thinking what…that they would get an ally?
There is something very evil about this.
What possible good will come out of this?
The media will cheerlead any opportunity to bash the Church, and these folks just gave them more ammunition.

.

but he has devastated traditionalist Catholics who adored his predecessor, Benedict XVI, for restoring much of the traditional pomp to the papacy.

sweeping and, to my non-traditionalist mind, very unfair generalization and exaggeration

**Francis’ decision to disregard church law **

Brother JR has pointed out the inaccuracy, nay, the ridiculousness, of this phrase countless times in several other threads here

one of the key priorities of Benedict’s papacy: reviving the pre-Vatican II traditions of the Catholic Church

all I can say is “sez who?”

In short, typical sensational article in the secular press
Agreed!! 😃 Happy Easter Brother/Sister!!

Where has Pope Francis disregarded Church Law, especially anything higher than simple orderly regulations?

Also, what’s there for Trads to dislike about the feet washing? They tend to like solemn form but they don’t necessarily dislike humility! And the feet washing on Good Thursday is as traditional as anything.

My nerves aren’t wracked at all. But that’s because I choose to trust my Pope.
Yes “to trust the Pope”

This is essential to being Catholic and is the great gift which Chist gave us through the ministry of Peter.

.

My nerves were wracked too until I decided to place my trust in the Church rather than my infallible judgments and opinions. 😃
Go over to fisheaters Catholic forum and you will see a multitude of little popes. 🙂

There is much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth.

I am having a hard time understanding why this is such a big deal. With what has been going on in the Church in the last two decades, this is what people are getting worked up about. Jumping from including women and non-catholics in the washing of the feet to Pope Francis likely to go against the laws of the church seems a little over dramatic.

This man as huge things to fix in the church and while he is doing that he still has to be the spiritual leader of the church, again a job he never aspired to do as a Jesuit. Tradition is good but not when we focus on it so much we miss the corruption going on. His actions should just not be causing this much flack unless you what to choose to look at it in such a negative light.

Those who loved Pope Benedict need to ask themselves, if had done what Pope Francis did would, you have been so critical?
