I believe it happened due to the man’s habitual manner of receiving, and he forgot at that moment to open his mouth and stick out his tongue. He probably meant to, since he was was given the privilege of receiving from Benedict XVI and was instructed in advance that the Holy Father administers Communion only on the tongue. The Pope would not want to embarrass him or make a scene by insisting that he receive on the tongue. The suggestion that it was a pre-planned incident is preposterous. The man was flustered and simply forgot. He’s made news all over the world, I’m sure to his regret.
I agree. I’m sure he was just nervous and went back to routine.

I don’t know. The more I look at it, the more deliberate it seems to me. A statement.

WHAT?!!! How do you know this? What is “Eucharistic security”?
Communion on the tongue may be preferred by the the Pope but he knows very well that in the hand is allowed. He never for once in this video shows any reluctance to place the Host in the hand. Some people just want anything Vatican II to be proven wrong. Not even the Pope would do that…ever.
That isn’t Catholic nor is it Christian.
I’m a “Communion in the hand - Vatican ll” kind of person, but I know that a few years back, some unsavory folks were selling the Eucharist consecrated from a Papal Mass on eBay! People even sell 1st class relics (complete with the real deal paperwork) on eBay. That should be enough to explain Eucharistic security!

People seem to be confusing Communion in the Hand and the 2nd Vatican Council. Communion in the hand is not called for by any of the council documents. That something happens post-Council does not make it “Vatican II”.

It’s also important to point out that there is more to it than security of the host, at least according to a spokesman for the Holy Father, he destributes on the tongue in order to help the devotion of the faithful.

There are other considerations as well: are the communicant’s hands clean? are there any particles left on his hands after receiving?

Oh good grief! I was making it known that even as someone who isn’t a “Traditional Catholic”, I can see the wisdom and necessity of “Eucharistic Security” from a Papal Mass. That’s what I was getting at and I will not be drawn into a discussion/debate/ruckus about COTT vs CITH.

Good night all!

Yet. Give it time.
If anything is likely to take this thread in a different direction, it’s comments like the one below:

Moving along: Constantine brought up a interesting point about the Queen of Spain receiving in the hand as well. So I googled and found this:

Makes me wonder if all heads of state receive in the hand. Is it based on protocol?

The Holy Father himself has stated: “One important reason is that there is a great danger of superficiality precisely in the kinds of Mass events we hold at Saint Peter’s, both in the Basilica and in the Square. I have heard of people who, after receiving Communion, stick the Host in their wallet to take home as a kind of souvenir.”

The CDWDS has also stated: “The celebrant priest, if there is a present danger of sacrilege, should not give the faithful communion in the hand, and he should make them aware of the reason for way of proceeding.”

No one in this thread has said otherwise.
He never for once in this video shows any reluctance to place the Host in the hand.
Like I said, I doubt he had any concerns that the head of Germany’s Parliament.

Huh? Not sure I understand how my post would lead to these comments…

Lightbound, no offense was intended at all, and I apologize if I gave any.

You sound like you are perfectly clear on CITH not being “Vatican II” but I know there are many on the boards here who are not, that’s why I tried to clarify the distinction, along with adding some additional reasons the Pope might prefer COTT besides people running off to sell the host on ebay.

Again, sorry if I came across the wrong way.

It is my understanding that CITH is only allowed in those countries where bishops have approved it by 2/3 majority and then conditionally. Otherwise it is forbidden. And that’s all I’m going to say on this thread.

No problem Dan! I think we’ve both been on CAF long enough to know that nothing gets as heated as a thread on the Traditional forums (poor Thomas Casey…he’s kept pretty busy these days) and I was worried this was headed that way (and it likely could be, but I’m staying out of it!). I would never have a problem attending a Mass (or Divine Liturgy) where COTT was the only option, but I’m more comfortable with CITT…for now 😉

Silly me :o!

I mentioned the wrong forum/sub-forum…it was just the topic and those that replied to it (usually ones that hang out over in the Traditional Catholicism section). Oh well, definitely time to bid a good night to my fellow CAF members!

The Pope can give communion any way it pleaseth him.
I don’t think you really mean that.

What if the Pope was tossing the host to people like a Frisbee? He’s not, because he has reverance for the Sacrament. But if he did, I’d object, and I think you would as well.

Pax Christi.

The Pope can choose which way people receive from him. If I was ever lucky enough to receive from the Pope at a Mass, I would kneel and receive on the tongue like I do at EF Masses. I’ve only been to one parish that does the OF, and people actually go to the rail & kneel, and receive on the tongue. Most parishes it is simply too hard to kneel & receive on the tongue due to space limitations.

Of course I would, but I wouldn’t tell him.

They said that COTT was mandatory with the Pope so people won’t keep the Eucharist as a Papal souvenir. Perhaps heads of state can be trusted not to make the Eucharist a souvenir?
