“dogma” in the Catholic sense, means a doctrine that is irreversible… or “set in stone” so to speak. This was my understanding. So, all dogmas are doctrines, but not all doctrines are considered dogma.

All doctrine is capable of being changed or revised, if not that could be very dangerous. It may be difficult and require a lot of steps, but can be changed. I would definitely say not all doctrines are dogmas, but in this case I would.

Dogma can not change. The Real Presence in the Eucharist, Mary is the Mother of God, the two natures, Divine and Human, of Christ.

If one looks to it, there is a finite number of dogmas.

There is much that we can disagree on but that we must follow.

One such thing is clerical celibacy in the Latin Church. I, as a Byzantine Catholic, understand and like the fact that the secular priesthood in the Byzantine Churches may be married. That is in our tradition married men may be ordained to the priesthoood. Now the pope has decreed that only celibate men may be ordained to the priesthood in the Latin Church. I do not totally agree with that but I follow it.

Papal decrees are not Dogma. For one thing, please define what a papal dogma is. The Holy Father has three offices. Not everything he says is a pope. Some of what he does is as patriarch of the West or as bishop of Rome.

For example. The fact that the pope has allowed bishops to decide if they will allow reception of the Eucharist in the Hand or female altar servers (as well as clerical celibacy) was done as patriarch of the West as in the Eastern Churches we do not have any of that. The act of now allowing reception of the Eucharist in the Hand or female altar servers in the Diocese of Rome was done as the bishop of Rome as it is allowed else where in the Latin Church. The the pope also might say things on a personal level.

While everything the holy father says should be given some weight it is not always binding on the Universal Church.

To my understanding a papal decree can be dogma depending in the use. To say that two faiths follow the same God, would to me be an exercise of the Church’s Magisterium on irrevocable adheence to faith. CCC Dogmas of the faith.

Only when the Pope speak ex cathedra, which has only happened a couple of times. Other than that for it to be a teaching of the Ordinary Magisterium it must be taught by the whole Magisterium, that is the bishops in union with the pope, and held from the beginning. As Islam did not start until late, I do not see this being a teaching of the Ordinary Magistirum.

But then again it doesn’t really matter as I am not discussing my personal beliefs on this nor does it matter in my spiritual life.

Well I don’t know I have always been told by the education system and the Church that the Muslims and Christians and Jews all followed the same God.
