Does anyone know anything about the rosaries that the Pope gives out to visitors? i.e. Are they a specific type? Wood, stone, color, metal? A specific Crucifix? Just curious. The question came up and I thought someone out there might know.
Thanks!
Rob

If the Pope gives out Rosaries, that would be pretty cool 🙂 when does he do this?

The Pope hands out rosaries, it seems, to people who meet him in a private audience…or at least not the very public ones. Scott Hahn, Bono, Presidents etc seem to be given rosaries.🙂

When the Pope was visiting the US, I attended one of the events, and noticed that they handed rosaries to all the “guests” who met the Holy Father (I had awesome seats!). The rosaries were in a pouch that looked the same as the free rosaries they were handing out to all the attendees. It was a brown faux leather pouch with the Papal coat of arms on it, and the Rosary was metal with white beads. But I’d also guess that when the Pope gifts a Rosary it depends on the venue…

Anne you are so fortunate!! It is my dream to meet Pope Benedict. Thanks for sharing this with me. White metal? Like some kind of enamel? Could you see the crucifix? Was it the “Papal crucifix” on it?

Well, a Felician sister that I know worked at the Vatican Offices gave me a rosary like the ones Pope Benedict gives. She said it was blessed by the Pope and that she was able to get some prior to leaving her post at the Vatican.

It was in a pouch with the papal coat of arms. The Rosary was black with a centerpiece with the Salus Populi Romani icon on one side and the papal coat of arms on the other. The crucifix was like the one of JPII.

Oh, that is SOOO COOL that you got to see the Holy Father when he was in the US two years ago! And you got a Rosary too! 👍

I had seen John Paul II four times, once as Cardinal Wojtyla (in Philadelphia for the 1976 Eucharistic Congress-I went on a bus trip led by a priest from our diocese who was a seminary classmate of his in Poland) and three times as Pope (in Rome in 1979, 1981-got great pictures of him at the public audiences-and 1983).

I have never seen Benedict XVI in person-I never saw him when he was Cardinal Ratzinger during my three Roman pilgrimages. I am ‘too broke’ now to go over to Italy. 😦
And it’s such a hassle to fly nowadays, with all the security stuff in the airports!

Here’s pictures of the Rosary I got from the Holy Father’s visit to the US:
