I was watching a replay of the pope incensing the altar at world youth day…

and it looked like he was saying something while incensing the altar and cross etc.

my question is what was he saying do all priest/bishops do this

i know the EF of mass you say something but what about the ordinary form???

He could very well have been silently praying the E.F. prayers for the incensing of the altar. I don’t know who else does (or would do) that.

That’s my Pope!

May this incense blessed by You, arise before You, O Lord, and may Your mercy come down upon us.
Let my prayer, O Lord, come like incense before You; the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice. O Lord, set a watch before my mouth, a guard at the door of my lips. Let not my heart incline to the evil of engaging in deeds of wickedness…
very beautiful prayers:thumbsup:

Indeed. It’s one of my favorite Psalms (141:2-4)
Let my prayer be counted as incense before thee, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice! Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD, keep watch over the door of my lips! Incline not my heart to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity; and let me not eat of their dainties! RSV-CE

If that’s true that he’s praying the EF prayers that is just another reasons why i love the Pope…

On the other hand, he might be muttering his opinion of whoever bought cheap incense. 😃

It seems that every priest and bishop has a slightly different way of swinging the thurible along the sides of the altar, but to my knowledge, there are no accompanying “secret” (i.e. spoken inaudibly) prayers that the priest is supposed to say while doing it.

Well…we’ll see what is the next surprise the Holy Father has for us…maybe restore incensing prayers?

idk…😉
