There’s a feature film that was made about that story that is very, very gripping and beautifully done.

As the story goes, she was to have reigned for 25 months, from 855 to 858, between the pontificates of Leo IV (847–855) and Benedict III (855–858).

She is mentioned in several writings, including that of 13th Century Dominican friar, bishop, and “chronicler” Martin of Opava, in his “Chronicon Pontificum et Imperatorum”.

The Encyclopedia Brittannica says the existence of Pope Joan was considered “fact” by attendants at The Council of Constance in 1415.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia:
*
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries this popess was already counted as an historical personage, whose existence no one doubted. She had her place among the carved busts which stood in Siena Cathedral. Under Clement VIII, and at his request, she was transformed into Pope Zacharias. The heretic Hus, in the defense of his false doctrine before the Council of Constance, referred to the popess, and no one offered to question the fact of her existence. She is not found in the “Liber Pontificalis” nor among the papal portraits in St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, at Rome.*

I keep finding clips saying that Theodoric de Niem, Secretary to John XXIII, spoke of her at the Council…but I’m not understanding what these clips are.

Does anyone know what this is?
It talks about the Vatican librarian including her in the canon of Popes as John VIII…

all of this is totally false

Satan and his agents can say or do whatever they want but the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Looks like a man to me and looks very much like John XXIII.

It is written in some other language. Probably Italian. I do not know if John is Joan in Italian.
That ‘whooshing’ sound is a joke going right over your head. Or perhaps you are making another one and it went over my own head. I can’t really tell.

Did Hus make mention of “Joan” in the defense of his own name “Jan”?

I know the documentary you’re speaking of. It’s a roughly 30 min. show put on by the Smithsonian Channel (via Netflix) about the Pope Joan legend. Contrary to what many here are fearing, this documentary is actually not anti-Catholic. They spend 15-20 min. setting the stage, explaining where the legend comes from, what has been written about it, but then spends the last 10-15 min. explaining why most secular historians believe Pope Joan never existed, and how it likely arose as a means to discredit the Papacy. How anti-Catholic! 😃

I know that yours was a joke. That is quite clear. Mine was a return joke.
