I love the mistake they made:

I have a soft spot for Pope Michael down there in Kansas, and for all of the other 18 or 19 self-appointed “true” pontiffs. When you peel off the absurdity, you see that it covers a painful wound of disappointment and disillusionment.

There was Pope Pius XIII, recently deceased. THere’s a guy in Spain with a pretty fair following. About 4 years ago there was a thread on CAF about this. I don’t know how to search with any sophistication, so I can’t get you the link.

I think this subject would make a good Master’s Degree thesis, if not a doctoral dissertation.
