Hi.

I had time only for a little research into the existence of such a document.

A few anti-Catholic websites on the Internet appear to promulgate this “Decretal de Translat” by “Pope Nicholas V” as a serious abuse of papal authority; the sites claim that the document declares that popes have the authority to change divine law.

What “divine law” means to these people, I have no idea.

There are at least two strong possibilities here.

*** The document never existed and/or is a false decretal.
  • The document, while it may exist, is being taken out of context for purposes of anti-Catholics.**
A significant number of false decretals were made around the 9th Century and were soon denounced soundly by theologians and Church officials as doctored or totally made up.

Pope Nicholas V (of whose name appears most often with the decretal name you gave) himself was one of history’s great popes. He founded what is known today as the Vatican Secret Library (nothing “secret” about it except for some confidential documents regarding people still living and canonical actions that are not appropriate for viewing–scholars can make appointments to see many of the documents there).

The decretal could have been made by another “Nicholas” as well.

I have yet to find any decretals from this pope that fit your answer at the moment. While mentions of the document are obviously anti-Catholic tactics, I would ask for any one who suggests that this document actually makes such a claim to retrieve a full copy of the document (and not merely quote what others have said without a direct source).

I found as usual taken out of contex in this case taken from a gloss

Popes write Church documents in Latin, not in Spanish, so it’s not an authentic Church document.

BTW, this is about the 3rd or 4th time this same false assertion has been made in as many months. Looks like someone tries to make the assertion, gets proved wrong, waits a few weeks and then tries the same thing again. That in itself should completely crush any credibility this person has.

This reference is to a forgery that was written to artificially bolster papal supremacy for political reasons. But no matter how many times or how many ways it is explained, anti-Catholics will use this phoney reference because it fits their hateful agenda.

Just because somebody wrote it down 1000 years ago, that is not even an official church document, it must mean that Catholics believe the Pope to be God. DUH!! HELLO???

I think most people with two functioning neurons can see that these anti-Catholics must be liars, so their desparate tactics backfire.
