Pope on sexual sins

I would also say that there is greater awareness of real social justice issues. Yes, Satan twists that so that people lump evils like abortion or recognizing gay marriage into the “social justice” category…but as Catholics we can applaud the genuine and very real strides that the West has seen in terms of programs for those truly in need, basic civil rights for non-whites and women, protective services for abused children, etc.

No it hasn’t. I’m just calling for clarity. Has nothing to do with him being “holier” than me. Am I not allowed to be disappointed? Or concerned? What do you think the Pope’s message was if the secular journalist changed up what the Holy Father said a little bit? This isn’t the only thing he has been ambiguous about… There is a pattern here.
Apply the same thinking to the stories you read last week about the boys from Covington Catholic.

Back then, you had to go out of your way to seek sexual immorality. Nowadays, you have to go far out of your way to avoid it.
There is nothing new under the sun. I bet there was a lot more going on back then than many people think.

And didn’t Aquinas tolerate, at the least, the presence of brothels? Because of what doesn’t majesty it into popular history, I think vice was far more common “back then” than we think.

The Pope was quite on the mark. Aquinas would agree with him. The worst sins are not of the flesh. Still, that doesn’t mean most people are not in hell because of them.

As an American young adult male I find this disturbing. The sin most people go to hell for is light? How clear is it today that most people (including Catholics) live the “I’m not a killer, mean, envious person, so I’m a good moral person” cliche.
This is ambiguous at best. He contradicts Fatima with this statement. I truly hope more young people have the courage to speak up about this. Most of us are guilty of the sin of omission as well. This is probably the most overlooked sin in the Church. Has to be. Especially among the youth. This isn’t exclusive to the US either. I love the Pope and I pray for him, but this is bad. As a young man who struggles with purity ( as all men do ) this is disheartening. What he should have said was: The sins of the flesh can be mortal sins if given the three circumstances (which we know what they are), however we need to pray and go to confession as often as possible, as well as sin no more. with the graces of the Eucharist and daily prayer/mass. THAT’S what he should have said.
I think you have to take this line with historic Catholic teaching
  • Yes, sexual sins are grave and often mortal sins
  • And yes, Fatima said more people are in Hell due to sins of the flesh
However, of the 7 Deadly Sins, lust is the sin that arguably the easiest to overcome (by willpower alone or by entering a chaste marriage). In other words, lust can be controlled with discipline.

However, the rest of them really require a lot of more work to master.

Also, people who purposely violate the Church’s teaching in regards to sex often (but not always) also suffer from the Deadly Sin of Pride.

I hope this helps.

Rob2:
When I see articles in which the Holy Father is referred to as Jorge Mario Bergoglio or just Bergoglio alarm bells begin to ring .
That’s a common practice in Italian journalism. For any Pope.
Sounds like “No prophet is accepted in his own country” – in this Sunday’s Gospel!
