Hi I was wondering why people have a picture of the pope in a frame in their house or somthing or in a calendar - why ?

Wives know well, thay have a picture of their children (rarely of their husbands) in thw wallet.
Why?
Because they love their children…

I have two pictures of Blessed Pope Pius IX, my favorite Pope and one of many of my patrons. I am looking for a good picture of Benedict XVI to hang in my living room or bedroom. Both of the Pius IX pictures are in my bedroom, one is very big and colored, the other is more detailed and black and white. Both are of a younger Pius IX, though.
What are your concerns to having a picture of the Holy Father in your house?

What exactly concerns you about this practice?
People keep pictures of other people for many reasons - friends, family, etc. In my home, we have pictures of relatives from genberations ago; we also have an image of the signing of the Declaration of Independence; we keep images and souvenirs from places we have visited. We, and many other people, have such things because they remind us about a part of who we are. So it is with images of the Pope.

Mine’s not in a frame. I have the photo of the Pope with my Patriarch and Bishop (in one shot). A nice reminder of how I am in communion with him (the pope).

Because they just want to. No one has to have a picture of, say, Mary either, but some people choose to.

I have two holy cards on the wall above our family altar - one of JPII and one of our current Holy Father. They remind me to pray for them. I also lay pictures of loved ones in need of prayers on the altar and holy cards from funerals - again, prayer reminders. Sometimes I will light a special candle for an intention on this altar - again, its a reminder, a call to prayer.
On the wall behind my office desk (I work from home) I have a picture of the Holy Father (back of a holy card), and photographs of various friends and pets, both alive and deceased. I like to be surrounded by reminders of those I love.
And for the record, the Holy Father IS family to many of us. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ, and the Pope is our spiritual father - that is why he’s called the Pope, which means, Papa. Our family was glued to the TV during the sad time when JPII was dying, and again when the Pope Benedict was elected. If we lived in Rome, we would have been there celebrating at St. Peter’s square. And we aren’t even cradle Catholics - both my husband and I converted in our late 30s and 40s.

But to some the Pope is just as important as family. Its another way to identify myself as a Catholic to anyone that enters into my home. Its a reminder to me to try and live out my Catholic faith to the best of my abilities at all times, not just for an hour each Sunday.

I have pictures of frank sinatra and Elvis…why? It’s because I like them. I have pics of my kids…why? Because I like them. I have pictures of penguins…why? Because I like them. Point taken yet? I’m not understanding what the big deal is…

People have always had photos / posters / calenders of people they admire. Some are political figures or sports figures or musicians… Some are even “pin-up girls”… Some are Kittens or horses…
Why do people do this? Because they admire the subject of the photos… Most every house I’ve ever lived in has had 4 pictures… Jesus, Mary, the current Pope and JFK…
Why? Because I admire them… I want reminders of their lives…

My grandmother has always displayed a picture of John Paul II in her living room. For her, he is not only a perfect figure that represents her faith but, a Polish man who was born in the same the country she was. She often spoke to me of the struggles that the polish people faced during the last century when I was growing up but, it took me many years to realise that this picture is also a symbol of absolute prevalence and optimism.

Guys, he’s not concerned or bothered about the practice; his profile says he is a “learning Roman Catholic”…he’s just inquiring and trying to understand the practice.
Chuck, as others have said, it’s simply a way to honor a loved one. They may not personally know the Pope, but seeing a photo of him may remind the person of how much they love the Pope and inspire them to follow his example.
Since you say, but the Pope is not family, well yes that is true. But many people have a crucifix or cross to remind them of Jesus. He is not family either, it’s just to remember him and all that he did and does for us. Catholics (and many other Christians) just extend this thinking to the Pope, and also other saints.
Of course, the Pope isn’t Christ, I just wanted to make a comparison.
By the way, I’ve noticed you have been posting many questions. That is great! Please keep asking them, and remember there is no such thing as a dumb question. Have you started RCIA? They will also be able to answer many questions. You can also arrange to speak with a priest about any questions you have. God bless!
