Pope requests TLM in every parish?

My mom told me last night that in this weeks Catholic Telegraph , (Cincinnati, Ohio) there was an article about the Holy Father issuing a letter requesting, I Guess expressing his wish, that all parishes would offer the TLM as well the OF. It also indicated that He was writing to all of the seminaries that they should make sure that their graduates are prepared to offer the mass in both forms.

I have not seen the article, so I don’t have any first hand knowledge on this. Can anyone provide any additional clarification?

Thanks

Peace

The thing is, though, this didn’t even make the British Catholic press that I could see, (checked last week and this week) and certainly not the national press or news bulletins. Nor has it been mentioned from the pulpit.
I think supporters of the TLM have been a little too quick in their rejoicing. I don’t see it happening myself, as the number of preists is declining rapidly, due to aging (although vocations are up) and parishes are having to amalgamate here in the North of England.

Since most of the letters written by the pope appear on the Vatican web site, I would think that something of this magnitude would be top news…nothing has been listed on the Vatican site about this.

I heard that there was a directive that all new seminarians be trained in the TLM, and that “they” should attempt to also train existing seminarians.

I’ve been told that our bishop here wants to offer the OF at a couple of places in the diocese, but no luck with a priest who knows the Latin (and is willing to do it-which is a topic for another thread) in the area.

We’ve got two parishes that I know of where the “old” altar is still in place, and at least one that I know of where the communion rail is still there and the old altar is there, so maybe that will be where we have one, if we ever do.

I’d like to see a TLM Mass, and we’ve got an SSPX chapel and an SSPX-breakaway chapel in the area-but y’all know the story with that, and I’m not going to those places.

Every parish? Maybe he meant every Diocese. Some parishes share their priests with other parishes, and only get one Mass per month; how would they handle that?

I’ll have to try and get ahold of the article I guess so I can an accurate quote.

My understanding from her was that he said every parish.🤷

It would seem that any push to have the TLM in every parish would fly in the face of last year’s MP.

Here is the article from Damian Thompson.

In the article, he quotes Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos (head of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei) as saying:
“Not many parishes – all parishes. The Holy Father is offering this not only for the few groups who demand it, but so that everybody knows this way of celebrating the Eucharist.”
An additional comment from the article says:
In addition, all seminaries will be required to teach trainee priests how to say the old Mass so that they can celebrate it in all parishes.
I emphasize the word “required”. Sounds as if there might be some changes in the wind!

I don’t think so. That would only be the case if all parishes were forced to hold a TLM to the exclusion of the NO. The purpose of the MP was, after all, to allow wider availability of the OF. Since many bishops seem to be ignoring it, more direct involvement may be needed on the part of Rome. Anyway, even if the Pope does feel the need to alter the MP, it’s certainly his right.

I’ll have to check and see if this is the same article that my mom has.

The MP was not about calling for the EF in all parishes - so any call now puts the original explanation for the MP in a shaky position.

IF any bishops are ignoring the MP then processes were built in for dealing with that.

If there is a “need” to alter the MP after barely a year how confident can we be about future documents?

It can only be a good sign when the sandalistas get their knickers in a knot over something. 😃

Summorum Pontificum still applies. Any group of three people or more which requests the TLM must get it, so don’t you worry.

This is simply an extra measure, a long-term goal on the part of the Pope. The Motu Proprio is an interim document meant to help facilitate the universal celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass in the future.

The families who are in our church receive a complimentary Catholic newspaper mailed to their address every month. The paper is called , “Texas Catholic” and the information that we received is from Catholic News Service.

The article pretty much says the Pope would like Tridentine mass in each parish, but not required or forcing it. “The document did not require all parishes to automatically establish a Tridentine Mass schedule, but it said that where a “group of faithful attached to the previous liturgical tradition exists stably,” to their request to make the Mass available.”

“Cardinal Castrillon told the press conference, however, that a stable group could mean just three or four people who were not necessarily drawn from the same parish.”

Here is the link to the whole article that we all received from the “Catholic Texas” newspaper, catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0803186.htm

I think this is the way to get the Tridentine Mass started in the parishes, with the Pope doing things slowly without force, which is a good thing. This will all get done in God’s time not ours.

I look forward to seeing the Tridentine Mass grow in all parishes in time. People of interest in the Tridentine Mass need to come forward in groups working with parish and priests to get this moving.

Blessings

Thanks for the link.
It does sound like this is the article my mom was looking at.

Obviously the Holy Father wishes to continue to encourage the Church to embrace both forms of the Mass, not by decree, but by education, and understanding.
The best part of this method is that it undercuts most objections that those on the far sides of the discussion. Nothing is being mandated. It’s up to the individual, but in order for the individual to have that choice, certain steps need to happen. Our Priests need to be trained to celebrate the Tridentine Mass precisely because it is allowed.
Ultimately, the course set by the Holy Father will allow the OF and the EF to grow together into a seamless whole.

" Cardinal Castrillon told the press conference, however, that a stable group could mean just three or four people who were not necessarily drawn from the same parish. "

This seems very unreasonable and could be easily misused.

Would you elaborate on your concern of “misuse”?

Perhaps you don’t understand. The MP has the force of law. The pope’s wish is just that, a wish. But it is a wish very much in line with the intent of the MP, which is to bring about a general liturgical cleansing and renewal. The EF can’t have very much effect on a parish where it is not present, can it?

If there is no one asking for it in a particular parish then why should it be offered?
