I guess it’s a big deal amongst Catholics in countries who still have the death penalty.

Unfortunately, it is a very hot button issue in the USA. Being pro/anti death penalty rises to the level of a cultural identifier here. As a result, people take these sorts of things very personally.
 
Gotta admit, this sure has taken our attention off MacCarick and other negative news about degenerates who have used the Church for their despicable actions while others turned their heads.
 
Meanwhile Catholics in the rest of the developed world just smiled and said “its about time”.
 
I wonder if inadmissible has a different connotation in Italian or Spanish?

If he had written, given the conditions today, the DP is morally imadmissable, that would make more sense, right?

Yeah, and if they had been following Church teaching in all other areas, I would respect that.

So everyone who opposes the death penalty is a liberal dissenter from other Church teachings? Come on.
 
Practicing Catholics in Europe were not the driving force behind getting the DP eliminated in Europe.
 
This “change” raises several very serious questions that have nothing to do with the death penalty itself, and it is disappointing that the moderators won’t allow the topic to be discussed. I expect this thread to be closed before too long.
 
This intervention is incoherent, not least of all with respect to the perennial teaching of the Church on the licitness of death as a punishment.

Just to demonstrate the little care with which this decision was taken, the new paragraph 2267 says “a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state.”

No where are we told what this new understanding is, but they left the old understanding that justified the application of the death penalty in the very preceding paragraph (2266): “Punishment has the primary aim of redressing the disorder introduced by the offense. When it is willingly accepted by the guilty party, it assumes the value of expiation.”

Of course, who cares if things are consonant with Scripture or Tradition or even logically consistent with other doctrines:
Pope Francis breaks Catholic traditions whenever he wants because he is “free from disordered attachments.” Our Church has indeed entered a new phase: with the advent of this first Jesuit pope, it is openly ruled by an individual rather than by the authority of Scripture alone or even its own dictates of tradition plus Scripture.
