It was a clear effort to call out some conservative Catholics for whom the abortion issue is paramount, while other “life” issues dear to Francis — racism, immigration, the death penalty and poverty — play second fiddle at the ballot box.

But Francis has also lamented that the U.S. church is “obsessed” with abortion, contraception and gay marriage to the detriment of its other teachings. Trump is staking his outreach to Catholic voters largely on his anti-abortion platform.
I was glossing over the the article and came across this and inwardly said "WHOA, that is what I have thought since abortion became a political issue.
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis called George Floyd by name, twice, and offered support to an American bishop who knelt in prayer during a Black Lives Matter protest.

Actually, your article doesn’t quote the Pope as saying racism is as important as abortion. It suggests that was his meaning, but that’s not what he said. This is a deceptive article. But it’s MSN, so that can’t be a surprise.

Even the liberal Jesuit magazine “America” contradicts your article’s false narrative.

U.S. bishops said abortion should be Catholic voters’ top priority. Here’s why they’re right. | America Magazine

“The common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights—for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture—is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination.”

Though the pope goes on to discuss a number of issues that violate human dignity, his writing makes clear that church teaching places a particular emphasis on opposing abortion because the right to life at conception is a prerequisite for every other human right.

“Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship,” meanwhile, warns against a “moral equivalence that makes no ethical distinctions between different kinds of issues involving human life and dignity.

It has been this way since 1973, and will continue to regardless of the Pope or poster.

Do we really need to quote His Holiness on what He has said about abortion? And that is further based on what the Magisterium and Encyclicals say?

And however one wants to interpret it, abortion has a lot of racism involved in it.

Over half of all black babies conceived are aborted. Planned Parenthood clinics are found overwhelmingly in minority neighborhoods or are within walking distance. 20,000,000 is probably the number of blacks aborted among 60,000,000. A third. Democrats stand by abortion, Planned Parenthood and so on. One wants to talk about racism, don’t forget this.

Pope Francis reportedly told a gathering of U.S. bishops in Rome that protection of the unborn is a “preeminent priority,” while also expressing surprise that over 60 million abortions have occurred in the United States since the 1973 Roe v Wade decision legalized abortion.
I’m surprised, this even needs to be brought up.

Preeminent - surpassing all others; very distinguished in some way.

It’s unconscionable to play down Pope Francis’ views on abortion. Every year, He addresses the issue.

Here is the problem: None of the articles quote the actual words of Pope Francis in context. (In fact, all the articles pretty much have the same author, they are have just been picked up by different outlets) All of them have Pope Francis’s “view” filtered through professor Anthea Butler. Other than having a doctorate in Religious Studies and Africana Studies, I can’t find anything that actually make her an authority on the Catholic Church. I don’t even know she is Catholic…her bio hints that she is not. She got her doctorate at Vanderbilt, not at a Catholic college.

https://rels.sas.upenn.edu/people/anthea-butler

So what is it about Anthea Butler that qualifies her, without bias, to tell me what Pope Francis actually said? Why can’t these news outlets let me read the actual words of the Pope, unfiltered?

When you see her interpretation contradicting the USCCB’s teaching, then that should cause an alarm to go off in everybody’s head. Why must the Pope’s words be filtered through an (apparent) Protestant professor?

Professor Anthea Butler does not need to tell us about the distinctions here, Trump has already been called the country’s first black president, Trump enabled prison reform, funding for historic black colleges, his administration has overseen the lowest rates for unemployment for minorities ever, the first African American is the first chief in charge of a branch of the armed forces. Trump has done way more for African Americans than any recent president.

In absence of knowing how Prof. Butler’s further views on this, I would be cautious of nefarious motives on this.

From the article:
He also said, “We cannot close our eyes to any form of racism or exclusion, while pretending to defend the sacredness of every human life.”
As said, racism certainly plays a part in the demographics of abortion. Why I’d simply find Trump’s agenda far less racist than what the Democrats have. We are talking about eliminating half of all of those conceived. If we were talking about the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990s, it’d be called genocide.

Biden enabled prison laws, Obama cut funding to the historic black colleges. Let’s not have the wool pulled over our eyes, at the worse, Prof. Butler may be exploiting this and I don’t care to be judgemental about further motives.

Race baiting, race hustling, the race card are all in the equation too.

Your first article is virtually word-for-word the same, and by the same author, as the MSN article. And again, it “suggests” that the Pope thinks racism in the U.S. is equal to abortion, but the Pope is never quoted as saying it.

So is your second article. Same author. Same statements. Same lack of actual statement by the Pope.

Your third article is the same as well.

So is the fourth.

Basically, this is all the same thing, repeated in different publications. Even some of the photos are the same. The suggestions are the same. The quotes are the same, and by the same people. (mainly one person) The lack of any actual statement of the Pope saying racism is as bad as abortion is the same.

You shouldn’t represent that this is anything other than your first article reprinted over and over again, and without the Pope actually ever saying racism is equal to the evil of abortion. And while all of the articles “suggest” that the Pope is downing Trump in this, there’s no actual quote of the Pope saying anything remotely like it.

just to name a few.
Well it really isn’t a few, it’s the same article copied by a few different news outlets. Nothing really quote Pope Francis saying what you claim is a “strong” message to US Catholics. In fact it most of it appears to be the perception of non Catholics.
Seitz said the pope thanked him without mentioning the demonstration, but the context was clear: “My recent words and actions on the events that are taking place in the country now” after Floyd’s killing.
In this one quote Bishop Seitz appears to be reading the Pope’s mind.

Just going to say it: not every word that comes out of a Pope’s mouth is infallible.

Just going to say it: not every word that comes out of a Pope’s mouth is infallible.
however…in this case…we don’t even know what came out of the Pope’s mouth. We only know the opinion of a professor who seems to be projecting her opinion and ascribing it to the Pope.
