What do you think? I kind of get the impression for the headline here that people will now get the impression that the pope will play the moderate. Which I don’t think is true. Why would Benedict want to do that? He’s done an awsome job in cracking down heresy so far. I don’t understand what the liberals are so afraid of.

Forgive me for saying this, but Andrew Greeley borders on the heretical, so I wouldn’t take much he says too seriously. I also heard on EWTN that it was expected that our American media would take this encyclical to mean that Papa Ben is going to lean more “liberal”. Because that’s what our media does. Not to worry. It’s all spin.

I agree that the media are trying to spin it their way. If they think and teach a certain way, eventually these notions will take hold. That is the Modernist approach.

I think the Holy Father is subtly getting us back to basics. He is pointing us toward the necessary tools: Bible, Latin, Love, Absolute Truth (as opposed to relative “truth”). These are weapons for the battle.

He is giving us a fair chance to fix our own problems (i.e. get in line) before he does it for us. Isn’t that what they call the “Pastoral Approach”?

Latin isn’t a necessary tool. It’s a language, like Spanish, or Esperanto. It’s the language of the Church, true enough, but one can be an orthodox Catholic without it.

I do agree with the rest of your post.

I was going to say. Andrew Greeley?!?!? If he told me it was a bright, sunny day, I’d pack an umbrella.

Language is a tool. Arguably not necessary, but here are the exact words. It should not be downplayed.

Granted, it is a tool, but it’s necessity seems limited by what the Holy Father says himself:

"In each one of the translations, the majority of the prayers will also be presented in Latin. Learning them, even in this language, will make it easier for the Christian faithful who speak different languages to pray together, especially when they meet for special circumstances. As I said in 1997, on the occasion of the presentation to my Venerable Predecessor of the Typical Edition in Latin of the *Catechism of the Catholic Church: *“Precisely in the multiplicity of languages and cultures, Latin, for so many centuries the vehicle and instrument of Christian culture, not only guarantees continuity with our roots but continues to be as relevant as ever for strengthening the bonds of unity of the faith in the communion of the Church”.

I’m not decrying it, I’m saying I don’t consider it the basic that you believe it to be. It’s quite possible to be an orthodox Catholic and not know a lick of it.
