I’m breaking my Lenten absence from this forum to post this:

Pope signs letter on child abuse cases in Ireland

Pope Benedict XVI Friday signed a highly anticipated pastoral letter to Catholics in Ireland dealing with a child sex abuse scandal involving priests, the Vatican said.
The letter will be published Saturday and will be accompanied by a briefing on its contents by papal spokesman Father Federico Lombardi to media outlets accredited with the Holy See.
On Wednesday Benedict told the faithful attending his weekly general audience that he hoped the letter ‘will help in the process of repentance, healing and renewal.’
and to ask you all to pray for us here in Ireland, and for abuse sufferers throughout the world, that the pope’s letter will do some good.

I too hope that this letter will do some good, and I am sure it is well intentioned to do so.
However, I fear that, in general, people here in Ireland will be too skeptical, and even cynical now to accpet it, regardless of what it contains. I hope not.
I can see their point, when the ‘safe pair of hands’ that was Cardinal Brady was present at the meetings that silenced victims and the innocent, and covered up for the gulity…what, if any confidence, can they have in the judgement and leadership of the hierarchy? But I digress…Lets hope and pray that there is a way out of all this that will bring comfort to the victims, and satisfy the general public. A tall order indeed.
