Vatican, May. 23 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI stressed the importance of Sunday Mass, and paid tribute to those participating in Italy’s national Eucharistic Congress, during his Angelus audience on Sunday, May 22.
“Every parish is called to rediscover the beauty of Sunday, the Lord’s day,” the Holy Father said. This is especially true, he added, during the Year of the Eucharist. “In the heart of this year dedicated to the Eucharist, the Christian people gather around Christ, who is present in the most holy Sacrament, the source and summit of her life and mission.”
Pope Benedict said that he was looking forward to his own trip to Bari, Italy, to participate in closing ceremonies for the Eucharistic Congress on May 29. Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the vicar for Rome and president of the Italian bishops’ conference, presided at the opening Mass on May 22, and the Pope said that he was already with the participants in Spirit as the congress began. Organizers expect up to 200,000 people for the final two days of the event.
During the Pope’s Sunday audience, he led the faithful for the first time in the Angelus. His previous Sunday appearances, since his election to the papacy on April 20, had been held during the Easter season, when the Angelus is replaced by the Regina Caeli."
