I’d prefer to see a whole transcript of what he said… Those like 4-5 quotes are to vague to understand what he was saying…

I’d love to obey the Pope in this regard, but I’m single! Now, if God sends me a good, Catholic husband, I am all over having lots of babies! But, at my age, He’d better hurry. I’m not getting any younger, you know!😃

Well, I have two (ages 4 and 3) and I’m willing to have more! I think Pope Benedict was probably speaking out of concern for the low birth rates in much of Western Europe. I read an article recently that reported about the low birth rate in Germany. Apparently, many Germans feel that having a baby is “not sexy”.

Here’s the Vatican web site version of it. Hardly more than what the article quoted. Do the *** things mean something was left out?

[edit] the stated context was Psalm 126. I’m not sure I understand but here it is:
Psalm 126:
A song of ascents. When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, then we thought we were dreaming. Our mouths were filled with laughter; our tongues sang for joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD had done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us; Oh, how happy we were!

Restore again our fortunes, LORD, like the dry stream beds of the Negeb. Those who sow in tears will reap with cries of joy. Those who go forth weeping, carrying sacks of seed, Will return with cries of joy, carrying their bundled sheaves.

Well I have three. Is that considered a large family? He’s right though we Catholics do need to populate the world with more Catholics. BTW, anyone know the average size of a Muslim family?

you can check out CIA world factbook here: cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html

There’re the fertility rates for some Islamic countries

Libya: 3.34 children born/woman (2005 est.)
Iran: 1.82 children born/woman (2005 est.)
Iraq: 4.28 children born/woman (2005 est.)
Pakistan: 4.14 children born/woman (2005 est.)

fertility rates for some non Islamic countries
US: 2.08 children born/woman (2005 est.)
UK: 1.66 children born/woman (2005 est.)
France: 1.85 children born/woman (2005 est.)
Germany: 1.39 children born/woman (2005 est.)

Thanks! Those are some pretty interesting stats.

This is something we definitely noticed when we were in Germany. We hardly saw any kids. We saw a lot of adults walking around with their dogs, but not a lot of kids. I think the problem is much worse than most of us realize when we just read the statistics.

I do remember seeing several Muslim families with several children though.

Very Sad.

The world groans that the Church is oppressive because she says “no sex” and here is the Shepherd encouraging us to have more. I guess it is all in the context 😉

Ahh. The Church doesn’t teach “no sex.” Just sex within the sacrament of marriage and being open to children. That’s what the world doesn’t like. Responsibility.

The pope also spoke at the impending economic troubles for Europe, given the low birthrate. Several countries there have created cradle-to-grave welfare states that will be unsustainable in the coming decades, given the low birthrate.

The U.S. should heed his words, too. We’ve got a social security system that began with 42 workers supporting 1 retiree. It’s won’t be too long before it’s more like 2 workers supporting 1 retiree (+ medical welfare). It’s a recipe for disaster.

As an aside, this is a lesson in fundamental political economics: the state does not create wealth, it can only redistribute it (i.e., take it from one person and give it to another). What happens when there aren’t enough people from whom to take $$ and there are lots of people screaming for $$?

Having grown weary of so many people screaming for jobs and handouts from the government, Abraham Lincoln summed it up best: “There are just too many pigs and not enough nipples.” Crude, but true—now as then.

I believe it does mean a portion was left out… Or it was skipped through… Or the statement was split up or something of the such, as it seems to have been said at an Audience…
I just hate when the news will paraphrase what the Pope has said to “dumb” it down somewhat… Because that usually messes up the meaning or takes part out of context

I’d say that by the standards of such educational tv shows as Captain Planet, you are just an eco-crisis waiting to happen, and you and your kids should feel very ashamed. 😃

IOW, you’re doing your part.

Once to a liberal with no kids, I finally ended a discussion by saying, “let’s put it this way. In a few years, you and your wife will have two votes, and my family will have eight votes against you.”

I always wonder where these statistics come from. Here in the UK nearly every family I know has at least four children

The democracies have to change, people who have many children, have to vote with this, namely, if a family had had 7 children, they have to vote, 9 people, the father, the mother and them like the tutors of seven children, why? the education or the health change with the goverments and this influences in children.
I am only 22 and I don´t have a girlfriend, but for families, having children, is a sacrifice, but Christ will pay you the sacrifice.
