I don’t think I have ever thought of the Eucharist as a “reward for the good” or a reward for being good. Maybe that is a deficiency in my own understanding…

It is the Wedding Feast of the Lamb mentioned in Revelation 19. As such, it is a Heavenly act that is made present in our temporal world.
It is the one Sacrament that all the Saints continue to partake in. It is no less for them as it is for us.

I think some take that as meaning only perfect people can receive. I’ve already seen a couple comments elsewhere where people are twisting his words to mean that the Eucharist was meant to gives strength to unrepentant sinners, not for those that “fall in line” to get a pat on the head. The tone those comment imply is that they feel the Eucharist is a reward for doing things you don’t like. Sad really.

I attended the RCIA teaching Mass last night. Even though I have been Catholic for 7 1/2 years now, there is always something to learn.
As Catholics, we are so BLESSED to have the Eucharist.

I never thought of it as a reward either. It is a gift freely given. You can’t earn God.

I’m not sure what connection your comments have to the notion that the Eucharist is a reward for (the) good.
Given the fact that everyone, before every reception, says “I am not worthy”, where does the idea of Communion being “a reward” come from?
In other words, I am surprised that the Pope said that “the Eucharist is not only a reward for the good…”

I don’t know what the Eucharist really ‘is’ or ‘does’… It’s part of the Christian Mystery… Just as the Last Supper was part of the Paschal Mystery.

The Saints in Heaven partake of Holy Communion. They are no longer sinners, nor are they weak. They have been made good. It is part of the Heavenly Reward
Rewards are not, of necessity, earned.
We see that in Matthew 5:12,
Heaven itself is not earned, nor are the Graces, but it is a reward. Likewise with the Wedding Feast of the Lamb that the Saints in Heaven partake of. That is Holy Communion, and it is their reward.

It’s a little confusing since Christ never came under the centurion’s roof.
It’s really an act of faith, more of a spiritual communion. A necessary component nevertheless.
