Pope the man of lawlessness?

Hi All

An accquaintance of mine recently made a scriptural case for the Pope being the man of lawlessness. I don’ agree of course, but I wanted to put forward some other candidates for the man of lawlessness from a Catholic viewpoint. I saw some of the CA articles on this but wanted to see if anyone had anything to add. This person also believes that Papal rome is the eigth king in revelation and so on…

Breaking the Code: Understanding the Book of Revelation by Bruce M. Metzger

check out this book by Metzger, basically your friend is a fulturist, who likely believes in the rapture and such.

Another interpretation that exists within catholic and some protestant churches is that the book of revelation was written in code to churches that were under perscution.

2 Thessalonians 2:8-10 (King James Version)

8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan **with all power and signs and lying wonders, **

10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Ask him why he believes the pope has “all power” and what miracles has the pope worked, what signs?

Your friend is playing “pin the tail on the antichrist”, many people have been named to be the antichrist throughout their interpretation history of the antichrist.

Your friend is saying the Pope is the anti-christ. Let’s play along for a second… Protestants have been saying this about all the Popes since the Protestant revolt in the 1500’s. Since then there have been dozens of popes. Yet scripture says there will be ONE anti-christ. Anyone who denies Christ is an “anti-christ” of sorts. But there will be only one anti-christ. So, the idea of calling every guy who ends up being pope “the anti-christ” is unbiblical as there can only be one! So, since there can only be one anti-christ… were they wrong before or are they wrong now? 😉
