As an evangelical this is really confusing.

particularly “consecrating the world to Mary’s Immaculate heart.” and
“marian spirituality”?

As anyone on here can guess there are many protestant christians who feel uncomfortable with this particular role of Mary.

Is there anyone who would like to take a shot at trying to explain this article?
First…what do you understand by to “consecrate”?

It would certainly help address your qualms if you provide your understanding of “consecrate”?

“Consecration to the Mother of God,” says Pope Pius XII, “is a total gift of self, for the whole of life and for all eternity; and a gift which is not a mere formality or sentimentality, but effectual, comprising the full intensity of the Christian life - Marian life.” This consecration, the Pope explained, “tends essentially to union with Jesus, under the guidance of Mary.”

I know little about consecration.

However i do have some what of an understanding of marian devotion.

If anyone could lay out a few clear definitions, that would be a very good starting point for this discussion.
  1. consecration
  2. marian devotion

From the old catholic encyclopedia:

Consecration, in general, is an act by which a thing is separated from a common and profane to a sacred use, or by which a person or thing is dedicated to the service and worship of God by prayers, rites, and ceremonies.

Consecrating something to Mary would be dedicating it to her care.

Marian devotion: this is a really big topic. I think you have to start out by understanding the concept of the Communion of Saints. This reflects the unity of the whole Church, living and dead. We as Catholics define it as the Church Militant (that would be us on church), the Church Suffering (another whole topic of theological dispute between Catholcs and most Protestants), and the Church Triumphant. This unity is a true communion, ie we can still help, and intercede for each other (well the Church Triumphant can help us, but does not need our help).

So praying to saints is simply asking for their intercession. A devotion to a saint is a focus on a particular saint in our requests for prayers. Protestants don’t accept this, yet praying to the dead is one of the most natural and common human actions one can find. How often does anyone, regardless of faith, find themselves talking to a lost loved one? Everyone does it. We just explain it.

Marian devotion is the devotion to who we believe is the greatest saint, Mary. Who, through her singular and unique “yes”, cooperated with the salvation provided by Jesus in a most profound way. It simply could not have happened without her “be it done to me according to thy word”.

Hello,
  1. Because the Pope is the vicar of Christ, giving the world to her is an act on the Church’s part to ask for her help.
  2. Because Mary was chosen as the Mother of our Lord, never sinned, and shared in Christ’s suffering she is Queen of Peace, among many other titles. We trust her with everything.
I could talk about this all day! Perhaps if there is something specific I could try and answer that.
