Pope to Cut Album for Charity

It will be coming out in November, and the money raised will go to music education for underprivileged children.

What I’d like to see is him doing a recording of Mozart piano pieces-guess we’ll have to wait till his wrist heals up!

BBC News is claiming that the CD will be titled Alma Mater

The pontiff is to release Alma Mater, an album of Lauretan litanies and prayers with musical accompaniment, through Geffen Records.

The label said listeners would be “shocked” by his “incredible voice”.

The album, which features the Pope using five different languages, will be released on 30 November.

A caveat: According to ABC News the CD will be released only if the Pope approves of the final product.

Before a papal song is available for download on iTunes, however, one very important person must sign off. “As soon as the record is completed the first thing we will do is get it to his holiness the Pope,” said Fernandez. I think Pope John Paul II also had an album, but it was recorded before/around the time I was born so I’ve never heard it. Not to de-rail the thread, but is that worth buying too?

This is not intended to sound disrespectful to the Holy Father. It is just a fact. Our current Holy Father is a secular priest. Therefore, he is paid a salary for his work in the Church and anything that he does outside, such as this album or teaching etc.

Religious do not get paid salaries. Seculars do. Basically, the company would cut the check to the pope. The pope would then give the money to his favorite charity or he can ask the company to pay the money into his favorite charity directly.

Not being an expert on the income tax laws of the Vatican, I don’t know how that works. Yes, the Vatican does have income tax laws like any other nation.

Once he becomes pope he also becomes the regent of the Vatican City State, which is parlimentary monarchy. Yes, the Vatican does have a parliament, a Prime Minister and a President. His palace is directly behind the Basilica of St. Peter.

As the regent of the State, the Holy Father has access to a fund that is set aside to run his household and for his personal expenses. Technically speaking, he is not being paid a salary any more than Queen Elizabeth is. But he does have personal monies deposited into an account for him.

You see, many popes have family: brothers, sisters, parents etc. We have not seen this in the last few popes. Though this one has a brother. Like every Christian, the popes must make a last will and testament to take care of their loved ones when they die. In previous times, we have had young popes with elderly parents and so forth. I can’t remember if Fr. George Ratzinger is older or younger than Pope Benedict. I’m not sure how that works out in terms of properties etc.

Thanks! That’s more along the lines of what I was thinking. I was having odd images of Benedict XVI standing in line at the local bank on the 15th and 30th of every month to deposit his paycheck. That didn’t seem quite right.

I had one cut by John Paul II, but it was not music. It had music in it. But it was the pope leading the 20 mysteries of the rosary. By that time they had added the Luminative Mysteries. Is this the one that you’re thinking about or is there another?
