Pope urges action after gay law
The Australian
7/5/05
EXCERPT:
POPE Benedict XVI today said the Catholic Church in Spain should reach out to those who had rejected its message after a controversial Spanish law authorising marriage between homosexuals went into force.
Addressing a group of 1500 Spanish priests and pilgrims visiting the Vatican, the pope called on the Church to bring its message to all, “including those who ignore or reject it”.
The pope made no explicit reference to the law passed by Parliament last week, which was vigorously opposed by Spain’s bishops.
But he urged Catholics to “go to the margins of society to bring to all the light of the message of Christ about life, the family and society”.
“The Holy Spirit pushes us to bring to all men and all women the love God the father has shown through Jesus Christ…a love full of concern, generous and unconditional, which he offers not only to those who listen to his message, but also those who ignore it or reject it.”
