As an Argentinian I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the first time the Holy Father has touched a cricket bat.

It’s a good way to do ecumenism… Play a game of cricket, go pray together. A friendly rivalry is always good.

Some serious Anglican/Roman talking going on too.

The group called The Malines Conversation Group met in Rome this past week. They are Anglican and Roman Catholic theologians, headed by one of my favorites, Archbishop Rowan Williams.
There was some serious talk going on back in the first Malines Conversations (30, not 20 years after Apostolicae Curae). Halifax’s last attempt. No joy.

From the standpoint of this group, I will bet a nickle and a half, no joy.

ARCIC has been meeting for nigh on to 50 years. Once upon a time, in the days of Pope Paul and Ramsey Cantuar, might have been a useful exercise.

But, like cricket, it passes the time, in a rather structured dance.

Nor would I – although cricket is played a little in Argentina: there were plenty of British migrants to Argentina during the days when it was part of the informal empire.

Their big legacy is polo, I think.

Looking at the photograph of the Vatican Eleven, there’s a lot of what appears to be Indian or neo-Indian faces in the team.

The Indians are pretty good at cricket, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Vatican 11 give the Queen’s team a run for their money.
The Vatican XI lost, I’m afraid, according to the St Peter’s Cricket Club Facebook page. When they toured England in 2014, they not only lost to the Royal Household but — adding insult to injury — to an Anglican XI.

All the matches seem to have been reasonably close though. As you say, always wise to include some players from the Subcontinent in your XI.
